He makes mistakes like all goal keepers do (how many do Loris Cech Karius make every week). Realistically there’s only De Gea Courtois and Ederson who you would swap him for in the prem. At least he makes saves which is the opposite of what Howard and Robles seemed to believe goalkeeping was about.
Harsh on Joel again. The main difference between Pickford and Robles, is that people seem to have ready made excuses for the mistakes Pickford makes, eg, the defence, which btw is largely the same defence Joel played behind last year, whereas everything Joel did was highlighted as being a mistake, even if it wasn't his fault
Prime example. Last week, Schneiderlin came and asked for the ball, Pickford rolled it to him, Schneiderlin lost it (obviously) and people criticised Schneiderlin for 1) asking for it, and 2) losing it. Not a hint of criticism to Pickford.
Last season, Schneiderlin came and asked for the ball off Joel, who rolled it to him, Schneiderlin lost it and people criticised... Well, Joel, for giving him the ball.
Now you could argue that this is because Schneiderlin hasn't been as good this season, and I agree. But if that's the case, then that's even more of a reason why Joel shouldve received less criticism and why Pickford shouldve received more. But like I said, not all things are equal, and there is no logic when it comes to our fans.
Pickford is obv our best player right now.
Whats "crazy" is taht he still has a few glaring faults to clear up. Yet, even with that, he is COMFORTABLY our best player.
Rooney has been our best player. In and out of the team, played in several positions, he has scored a lot of important goals that has got us the majority of the points we have picked up. Pickford has been decent, but has played a lot more games, and as has been pointed out, he's conceded a lot of goals. His distribution is the very definition of erratic. He has been the one constant part of a defensive unit that has got drastically worse since last year, a year when he was also the constant part of another defensive unit that underperformed and conceded lots of goals, even though he also made some good saves. He's made some good saves this year too, and he is young and still learning.
But honestly, the disproportionate credit he has received is baffling.
The only reason I can attach to it is people's hatred for Joel is so strong that people think the more they talk him up, the more they will convince themselves and other people how amazing he is.
He has been, by and large, as average as the rest of the team, and shares as much responsibility as the rest of them. Maybe he needs to work on organising his defence more.
