Steve Walsh is most culpable in my opinion. It’s not rocket science, it’s just footy.

Hope the birthday is going ok.

Thats the trouble sometimes mate, folk try to make it difficult.

And yeah, birthday is sound. Ta

When there's a mistake in the defence you can see him start to scream before he notices the vacant, not arsed stares coming back at him from the defence, making him gaze off into the distance feeling the ever encroaching Sunderland Mk2

Whilst of all the defenders he may be the least culpable, he is STILL part of the defence. And, on his watch, he has still allowed more goals than ANY other keeper in the entire Premier League. He has to share some of that blame.
He's also made almost more saves, too, so what's the point?

Pickford is obviously a fantastic shot stopper and in that sense saved us from a bigger defeat, but there are a couple of areas of concern for me. I'm not sure whether it's coaching or his natural game at this stage in his career.

The first is his initiative. He comes with a really good reputation with the ball at his feet, but most keepers who have that in their game play the 'sweeper/keeper' role. Pickford seemed rooted to his line yesterday, even when it became clear that Burnley's main avenue of attack was long balls into the channels to exploit our lack of pace in defence. I don't know whether he's been instructed to hang back or what, but he could have stopped the first goal easily had he taken a more advanced position.

The second is his dominance of the box. He's not an enormous keeper, but he's big enough, yet Burnley had several crosses that landed on the six yard line with Pickford nowhere near. I don't think in the history of football there has ever been a penalty given against a keeper for rough housing his way to claim a cross. They're allowed to do so much more than outfield players, so why is he not using his size and that leeway to clear the six yard box and dominate crosses?

And his shot stopping parry/punch/block straight back to the danger area. Achieve nothing and create chaos for the defence and he is the only keeper in the entire league who does that EVERY GAME!

Nobody is absolved of blame though, they've been utter tripe to a man but Pickford has done well, better than a lot of others, is young for a GK and will get a lot better , if we don't destroy him of course.

I'm pretty sure that my point is exactly what I said. "He has to share in SOME of the that blame" for being a keeper that has allowed the most goals of any in the Premier League.
To what extent do you define 'some' proportion of the blame? As for me, while he hasn't been perfect, Pickford has been a shinning light this year.

Even with an utterly woeful defence in front of him and one that has consistently changed, he's single-handedly kept us in numerous games.

Or, he's stopped more drubbings than we've already received. While I understand your point, as he's part of the unit, I feel it's a crass comment.

Yes he not without his faults and has areas where he can improve, but if he had a semi-consistent, stable and effective defence in front of him then...

... well, I think we'd be all be heralding him as one of the best in the league. Throwing the number of goals he's conceded at him simply won't help.

I wouldn't be surprised if he moved on in the summer if a bid from another sizeable club came in, as we're currently just Sunderland reincarnated.

That's his biggest weak point for me, however yesterday he got stuff to safety much better. You don't often get Premier League Goalkeepers who are 21, we have to accept at this stage of his career mistakes will happen.

When you are facing 20+ shots nearly every game, its common sense that he will concede a lot, I think those in front allowing every team 20+ shots are the ones who need blaming.

I should certainly hope he gets better, 61 goals conceded this season...

It's a bit late in the season for all this. He has been managed woefully. He has been exposed far to soon and should have been rotated with much more regularity, so when needed can be stuck on bench with little fuss. Now the predictable gnashers are out for him too.

We spent a fair amount of money on a young keeper who shows potential and ability, we didn't spend it on the finished article.
He is showing he will get better and better, but due to age and inexperience he will be caught out at times.
We have a good keeper at the moment who has the potential to be a great keeper...stick with him and he will prove that
