Pickford is obviously a fantastic shot stopper and in that sense saved us from a bigger defeat, but there are a couple of areas of concern for me. I'm not sure whether it's coaching or his natural game at this stage in his career.
The first is his initiative. He comes with a really good reputation with the ball at his feet, but most keepers who have that in their game play the 'sweeper/keeper' role. Pickford seemed rooted to his line yesterday, even when it became clear that Burnley's main avenue of attack was long balls into the channels to exploit our lack of pace in defence. I don't know whether he's been instructed to hang back or what, but he could have stopped the first goal easily had he taken a more advanced position.
The second is his dominance of the box. He's not an enormous keeper, but he's big enough, yet Burnley had several crosses that landed on the six yard line with Pickford nowhere near. I don't think in the history of football there has ever been a penalty given against a keeper for rough housing his way to claim a cross. They're allowed to do so much more than outfield players, so why is he not using his size and that leeway to clear the six yard box and dominate crosses?
