That's the big thing for me. Remember when Joel came into our team at the same age and looked an absolute bag of nerves, we won't get that with this lad, he's got a cockiness about him already.

...he has. That was evident in the summer tournament for England. I just think it's wise to be prepared for a mixture of brilliance and a few howlers. Not sure who the keeper coach is these days but there is room for development. I want to see him regularly taking crosses at their highest point. Looking forward to seeing him tonight.

..I am encouraged by that but Southall commanded his box. I think Pickford is more of a goal line keeper but he's only young and I'm sure he'll develop. I said the same about De Gea and have been proven totally wrong. I like Pickford, he seems a confident lad, we might have to suffer a few 'downs' before plenty of 'ups'.

It will help to have Keane as a dominant CB. I really wish the young man well.

I remember Southall talking about perfect saves and be mentioned Bailey of Utd. He said he was a top keeper but always wanted to save "the coached" way instead of just getting something like a leg, knee, face in front of the ball as that's the job of a keeper. It always stuck with me that and Schmeichel was very much the same kind of keeper. I've seen so many little moments with Pickford where I've thought "bloody he'll that's Southall like". He looks like he wants to make saves, he looks like it matters to him.

Great recipe imo for a top keeper is the above eggs. That commanding of his box will come imo as well, that comes with experience and an understanding with your back line which he'll get in time

Edit: well that's what I hope anyway lol

Wasn't called on a lot but when he was he simply looked the part even in the little things. He's going to get tested by our run of difficult games early in the season but on tonight's evidence he won't be intimidated. Looking forward to seeing how he performs.

Caught the ball, punched the ball and got distance on it and did other stuff which you'd expect a decent keeper to do.

He'll make mistakes over the course of the season, and doubtless the ones who have fallen in love with Joel will castigate him for them, but I think he'll turn out to be a good signing for us.

6 foot for a GK is very short. It has to be a concern. I know there's examples of successful smaller GKs but by and large you'd want them to have that extra reach.

Wish I had extra reach, so I could slap you from across the pond. x

Anyhow, pickles...
