Twenty years ago - yes. Ancelotti with a transfer pot had us finish in 10th. Past achievements in clubs with different circumstances mean little. Need to be immediate and forward looking with the next appointment taking into account our current circumstances.
So calling him a chequebook manager also means little?

Just remember where we currently are as a club. We are terrible. The football is the worst I've seen on a consistent basis and that's saying something. We are not fortunate enough to have a selection of managers at the door waiting to come in. Jose is an improvement on what we have, his stock might have dropped over the years but I believe he is capable of moving this club up the table and do a good enough job for the next person to build on.

I loved Mourinho once upon a time but his best days are gone just like I loved Wayne Rooney once upon a time but didn’t want him back and when he came back it proved my point. Let the the past stay there and get someone in for the present and future.

The funny thing, though - and I agree with you - is that Rooney was still our best player the season he came back and an improvement over what we already had. I suspect that would also be the case with Mourinho. I mean, it's not that high a bar for him to jump...

Jose does not put up with players who are here for the ride. We need someone like that at this club. Someone to identify the issues quickly, hive off the dross in a corner and push the club forward for the next manager to take over in the usual 2-3 seasons.

Obviously I'd prefer we hired the next Special One but I don't think we are in the right place to do that. More a stepping stone for a manager like that currently, unfortunately.

Sometimes, as we know, there's also those situations where clubs often land on the 'right man' for them regardless of where they end up on their career trajectory. We're likely seeing it with NES at Forest currently. Emery at Villa. Klopp at Liverpool. Moyes with us back in 2002 even!

Not saying that Mourinho would be the 'right man' for us in any certain terms, but I wouldn't suggest that'd he'd be a complete mismatch either. We have one of the most passionate fanbases in the country and, as we know, he's a very passionate fella himself. He's always been very complimentary about us as well.

Weird trepidation in relation to Mourinho; he was about to make history again the year before with back-to-back European trophies if not for frankly corrupt officiating. He still got enough to get us to a domestic trophy at the least.

He won’t suffer fools that’s for sure, regardless of his stock not being as high as 10 years ago, almost every player who’s played under him says how his attention to detail is off the scale.

Just imagine Mourinho leading us out BMD
It would feel like we’ve won the lottery from kin Sean Dyche at Goodison park
