I think this is all about right. But let’s have it right, employing a footy pundit, isn’t exactly appointing the head of your military, or a nuclear physicist. It’s just someone wanging on about footy.

It’s an entertainment business, a big part of picking pundits is gonna be picking people who they think the public will like, for whatever reason.

So it’s never gonna be as clear cut as who’s the most knowledgable or informed, there’s always gonna be a bit of who do we (the producers) think will be popular with the public.
As a nuclear physicist I am quite concerned by how much you don't think we wang on about footy.

I think there is a need for a more educated outlook on the game on TV and I agree with @Bohemian Toffee that there is a distinct lack of it compared to other sports.

I also said there was a requirement to be interesting and entertaining though. At the moment it is largely big names coming from Sky clubs who engage in largely banal tribal banter.

Maybe that's what the public wants but it holds no interest for me, I haven't watched a build up or half time chat for years.

My point was really just that the best people should be in the role regardless of gender or colour. If that means annoying some people with women on every week then so be it. However if the best people are all white males then the same is true.

And I agreed with you. Just emphasising that the entertainment business often leans on those ‘interesting and entertaining’ criteria you mentioned (as well as many others) much more heavily than you would in other occupations, and probably less so on the “technical skills/knowledge” element.

None of them can define the very word that triggers them

Thats his argument and the basis of it is true.

If what he's saying is false, women's football would be bringing in the same level of revenue as the male counterpart. The intensity level of the sport is also much different as are the physical requirements at the highest level.

Now for me where I think Barton is wrong is applying his argument on meritocracy in punditry to solely gender. He should be also highlighting the sheer level of ex Liverpool pundits and jobs for the boys like Jamie Redknapp.
You are a prize cockwomble but I guess you know anyway. Probably got mentioned on your birth certificate.
