I'd really not take much notice of the rats. Most objective football fans would say Mata walks into their side as probably their best player. I remember Chris Pajak (Milkybar kid from Redmen TV) even saying as much and that he was United's best player when Mata beat Liverpool 2-1 a couple of years back. He's won the world cup and premier league for goodness sake.
This next bit might sound a little odd but one of the most pleasing bits of the transfer for me is the price. It shows to me that we are striking a hard bargain with probably the biggest club in the world. This bodes well going forward. While Moshiri has significantly more than is widely reported (and may have silent backers) nobody has enough money to last forever. More importantly though a culture of paying what we might define as silly money for players never enhances success as much as it ought.
I think just spraying money about leads to a complacency particularly on the recruitment side of things which is never a positive. We could have easily ended up paying double what is being quoted for Mata given the current sales environment so to progress things at 21 million quid would be fantastic and make it clear we are no pushovers in negotiations.
I hate to keep making comparisons and I do so this time not because we are their rivals but more because they are an example of bad recruitment, when you look at Liverpool you rarely get that same feeling of calm and good negotiation. Everything always seems slightly panicked and desperate. They don't seem very good at arriving at "win win" negotiations and often take an age to get a number of the players they want often for significantly above what they say they are publically prepared to pay. In all honesty I think when they come in for a player sides no they can push them much higher.
The Mata business seems to have proved the opposite for us. Whatever we think of him eye brows would be raised if a side finishing 11th could get him in. A journalist today on talksport said "surely he could get a better club" in fairness to Brazil he said things have changed at Everton whole Pearce said it was a natural fit (which I think it is).
The other striking things on all the players being linked is that they are all ready to do a job this season. We have become used to an era of Moyes/Martinez/Kenwright of speculating on players. Either younger players who have potential or inconsistent players who we can get the best out of. Partly out of necessity, partly out of those managers not really wanting big egos we moved away from buying players who improve the first team.
Under Koeman we look to be simplifying things. He seems a bit shy, but underneath is a confident aura and I don't think he is scared of managing any ego. I think he will look for players who improve the first team. It sounds a very simple premise but very few managers do it.
Anyway if we can get it done, particularly at that price it would be fantastic. As I've said before it reminds me of when we signed Beardsley, he's a very similar player and I think will flourish here.
