judge us at the end of the transfer window – not now

I'm not really getting all the excitement.

I think we've done some smart enough business at the back. Tarkowski and Coady bring a bit of hard-nosed nous. Onana looks like he'll have something to offer in midfield, but we are terribly weak in this department overall. Davies is still playing matches and we all know he's not up to it. I mean, Iwobi - who has been a disastrous signing up until very recently - is our new "best player". So, the standards aren't too high, folks. As for up front, McNeil and Maupay could go either way. McNeil is already struggling (even if it is early days).

Are people really concluding that the addition of a 33-year-old Gueye and a reserve at Manchester United makes this some form of triumph for Thelwell? I mean, those two do give us different options in midfield - which is a huge problem area. But there are no guarantees one will do anything past the World Cup and the other will do anything at all.

And are we really trusting Maupay to do enough if DCL remains as injury prone as he has been over the last 18 months?

Don't get me wrong: there has been a concerted effort to address most of our issues. But we lack a goalscorer and a proven creator. I think the jury is very much out on this window. We've had summers in the past where we claimed we had "won" the window. Well, we might have - but they must have been made of glass, because we didn't win too many matches afterwards.

Gana and Garner today before it "slams shut" does not constitute any great success unless a proper goalscorer is bought. We're doing the bare minimum. That's not necessarily a bad thing - but it doesn't justify unbridled optimism or praise for recruitment.

^^^ This

Striker is golden priority, the head says throw 25M for Joao Pedro but he’s not gonna hit 15-20 goals, he’s still a work in progress, a luxury player, heart says go for Diaz 20M, looks the part, his finishing ability from diagonal & central positions is top notch, very much reminds me of Kane, aerially sound too, think that’s the one we concentrate on??

I think it also has to be judged in context of our financial situation. Strengthening defence and midfield were priorities. Losing Richarlison has seen our attack weakened yet whilst not inspiring Maupay may not be a bad discount replacement allowing investment elsewhere around the pitch. Also keeping Gordon if he now adds goals to his game could be more than cover for what we lost in Richarlison. All in all a good window, a great window would be adding some additional attacking threat today (forward or winger).

I think so. I think we have a few pennies left, we can also get another 2 loans , with one being domestic and one from abroad
We can get 4 additional loans mate.

One domestic and three more from abroad.

I'm guessing we will save one of the abroad loan spots in case in January someone becomes available we really want as we can turn the Coadey loan into a permanent deal and then loan again from an English side

I judge it on has the signings progressed us. It's marginal better at best when you consider our top scorer left and we haven't replaced him
Well defence and midfield are certainly stronger. Richarlison is a loss and very unlikely to be replaced like for like. We have signed s forward in Maupay, bug haven’t seen him play.

It seems we will be signing another forward.

I think the outgoings have been good too. Without that, we would be in a really bad place.

There are two metrics on which it should be judged.

1. Has the "business" done all it can to resource the manager, within its constraints and capabilities? I'd say it probably has.

2. Has the DoF/manager made optimal use of those resources? Only time/results will tell.

Whatever happens, I still think we need another forward today and failure to address that need earlier is a black mark.

Getting an additional forward today would turn a good window into a very good window overall. It's shaping up that the first XI looks radically different but get that 2nd forward in please.

This is all within the context of 45 points being the target not anything higher. For the net spend that's reasonable.

You also have to consider the financial limitations. It’s easy to criticise from the sidelines, but difficult to change a squad in one summer on a shoestring, whilst being forced to sell your best player.

The bare minimum? We will end up signing eight or nine players. The squad had more holes than Swiss cheese and more long term injuries than The Royal hospital.

We are a club that just avoided relegation, haven’t won anything for 27 years and are not an attractive proposition. From what I can see, the business is reasonably solid and sensible. I would have preferred the forward in earlier, but we are trying to get the most out of a small pot and beggars can’t be choosers.

This seems perfectly reasonable to me.
