What money we had didn't need to go where it did, though. The value hasn't been there with those signings.
They clearly banked on DCL being fit and using Maupay as a back up. It backfired badly. I could see the logic at the time of wanting rebuild from the back up, but it did leave us short up top. Probably all 3 of Onana, Garner and Gana was too much. Maybe could've gone for 2 of the 3 and used the rest on an attacker.

The purchase of Maupay and McNeil only makes sense if your intention was to pay them with Dom as a front three, Maupay making space for Dom and McNeil whipping the crosses in for him. Otherwise it is a baffling recruitment idea!

I think the focus on defence and midfield was correct, but yes maybe we didn't need Garner.

My main objection, though, is the lack of value with McNeil and Maupay, as I say.

Yes, Maupay is not a lone striker. He has neither aerial presence nor speed. You need at least one of those to play that role.

This is the sort of thing that makes me think a new manager with a different system might get the best out of the players in front of him, rather than trying to mould them into a philosophy. Maupay AND Calvert Lewin has got to be worth a try surely?

The only manager who plays a 4-4-2 which would fit both Maupay and DCL is……..Sean Dyche!

Someone make Everton FC go away forever please.

He covers us for longer term though and won't be on big wages, he also is someone who can take set pieces/corners which we didn't have. Gana was a silly signing, an older player who's game is largely based on work rate yet his legs had clearly gone, not a low wage and never going to be anything other than a short term fix. Not just that the whole transfer dragged on forever. We would have been better looking at a more attack minded CM imo, someone a bit younger and better value.
