Have to wonder why he didnt get the Danjuma deal over the line before Lampard was sacked.

Also how he didnt push the board to hold onto lampard until the deal was over the line.

How he ticked off dyche as well is beyond me.
If reports are correct, Danjuma was swayed by Spurs and his agent because the uncertainty of who’d replace Lampard was well known behind the scenes.

You could argue that he hasn't got a sniff at Spurs, but he's getting paid. He might simply not have the character to come and show grit in a relegation fight.

100% this. Said it all last summer, and I think it was on both Thelwell and Lampard. I don't even think they knew what formation we wanted to play until the season kicked off.
No RW, no ST but 3.5 LWs and 6 CBs. 3 defensive mids + Davies and only Iwobi who can go forward in midfield. The squad is and was a disjointed mess with no priority given to actual problem areas.

Oh McNeils availible? Well we might as well sign him.. oh Garner is availible despite already signing 2 other mids? Might as well grab him as well. It was pure kid in a sweet shop stuff

Its why in part we should have kept Lampard...Keane and Maupay would have gone and we'd have had Danjuma + i imagine one more in.

Instead weve got this braindead fool in.

Or, maybe not. Even if we'd brought Danjuma in, Lampard wasn't the man - he's shown that at Chelsea. If anything, we should have moved him on earlier.

While with hindsight I'd have preferred someone else, Dyche being appointed earlier would have likely meant we weren't in this position right now.

I'm confident we'd have got a victory against one of Wolves or Southampton.

Such a disjointed team/ squad. It’s remarkable how lacking they are in pace, inventiveness, cohesion, intent , ruthlessness.

Imo it’s been a case of “right who can we get” rather than “what do we truly need”. True, finances are troublesome to say the least but we still spent money last summer. and as I said above, it’s a case of “who can we get” rather than “what do we need”. The likes of Brighton have shown you can be smart with what funds are available.

This fella apparently spoke to the FAB recently and was apparently “honest”. The FAB have not stated what those comments were , no details, nothing. He also hasn’t spoken to the fans in general yet I’m sure he’s more than content to pick up his salary.

We clearly needed substantially more goals, more pace, more mobility , more character, more quality from that side that stayed up against Palace?

What do we do? Sign a Brighton back up forward with a weak scoring record and a left footer with a questionable assist and goal record at a relegated Burnley. What was the thought process behind signing these two? I suspect it was “right who can we get “ rather than “what we need”.

Don’t forget we went five games into the season until the Brighton back up Maupay was brought in.

We don’t know what has gone on and what is his fault and what isn’t. However it’s possible that he will be the Director of Football of Everton that was relegated.

I think it's worse.

I think they genuinely looked at the signings last summer and thought 'they'll get us through another year'.

They've known the financial situation and tried to coast by with 'proven' PL players hoping they could go out and buy more this summer. Pure ignorance as much as incompetence.

What do you think would have been better:

1: Keep Lampard. Get Danjuma. Move out Keane/Maupay and perhaps bring in another?

2: Where we are now?

3: Appoint someone different but no signings?

Remember that we had Danjuma with Lampard. Keane and Maupay we now know had offers to leave and i imagine those two out would mean another in.

Managerial changes probably meant money earmarked for players was redirected.

No guarantee that any of that happens. Danjuma was probably going to Spurs the minute he heard of their interest.

Indeed. Danjuma didn't go to Spurs because we sacked Lampard, but rather he'd chosen a different destination because of the uncertainty and turmoil.

There's no guarantee that we'd have got him, and to be fair if we'd kept him and kept Lampard I suspect we'd be in a similar or worse position.

I believe that Danjuma and agent were going to do the deal but then the agent got a sniff that Lampard was about to be terminated.

Also Keane and I think Maupay have both said they had offers to leave.

That would have generated funds to sign a 2nd player, even if on loan with a summer buy clause.

Moffi for example was available on a loan with end of season buy clause.

Not getting a forward in has absolutely killed us and that's on Thelwell, for that alone he should either walk or be punted. We can all bemoan the midfield and defence, rightly so but not having a forward who can occupy and threaten teams means we concede possession far too easily in the final 3rd.

It is pretty shocking for a long established premier league club to be so negligent. You can't win games if you can't score.

Just about every single one of us understood this back in July/August yet here we are season ends in the doo doo and relying on Dom getting match fit and scoring every game, in 5 games no less, to be even in with a shout of staying up. Unrealistic and too much pressure on a lad who has been out so long.

GTFO Thelwell this is on you for this season.

Disagree with that - Lampard should have fine but I always thought the timing of his sacking was a little wierd, given we were getting a sigNing over the line. I don’t know what influence Lampard had over Danjuma’s decision to join us, but if he was influential (having been a high profile international) sacking Lampard before getting the signing over the line was amateur hour. Danjuma aside, I think Lampard should have been sacked after the second Bournemouth loss

A bit off topic, but I've never swayed from the opinion that the Moshiri era could have been successful if he had just let Marcel Brands run the footballing side of things without interference.

And put a competent board in place.
Problem with Brands is we don’t really know which signings were his and which weren’t. The only signing I ever thought was a good one in the Moshiri era was Pickford. Even Richarlison was massively overpriced and overrated.
