I think January might have been the toughest month for any DoF in the world if they were in his position. You had utter turmoil at the club from top to bottom, the manager being sacked, then the club trying to go for Bielsa and then Dyche, two styles of play that couldn't be more different, then you had the owner going out being a dope and saying we'll get a striker, then bidding £40m for Conor Gallagher basically informing every club that we've got money to spend, Danjuma rejecting us right before signing a deal and then the chairman butting his fat head into every potential deal leading to nothing getting done. This is basically all information that the club put out too, I can't even imagine what else might've been going on.

I don't hold anything against Thelwell in regards to what happened in January. It was a thankless job. The fact that he was even able to line up deals for Elanga, Danjuma and Beto are a testement in my opinion, the fact they fell through isn't really anything to do with him.

Personally, I find the people who try to lay the blame at Thelwell or really at Brands when he was here are just truly very naive. I don't think either man are the best DoF's in the world but the fact that Moshiri and Kenwright are the bosses of this club make it an impossible job for anyone, they not only bow to every manager's opinion but they also directly overrule thier DoF by trying to involve themselves in deals.

There's a reason that Brands got a job after leaving Everton, Thelwell will do the same, the likes of Kenwright, DBB and the rest of the higher ups at Everton will never work in football again though, such is why they're hanging on with their death grips and refuse to let go.
Really good post this mate, what you say is spot on, this bit is true "I find the people who try to lay the blame at Thelwell or really at Brands when he was here are just truly very naive" as you asy there is a reason why people leaving Everton are getting jobs, we think they failed, but the failure wasnt on them, same with managers really, Koeman, Roberto, Silva, all working again

Might be an unpopular opinion but I actually think Thelwell has done very well so far given the situation around him. Maupay and Vinagre on loan have been his only flops and from things I've seen from Lampard apparently vetoed a load of other strikers more like Calvert Lewin because he wanted someone with PL experience. So he's got Vinagre really to answer for, that's about it.

On the other hand though Tarkowski, Onana, McNeil and Garner are all good signings that improved the squad and would be sold for big profit tomorrow if offers came in. He also negotiated fantastic deals for Coady and Gana too, with them both costing a combined £5m if we made Coady permanent. He's also done decent business on outgoings too, would've liked to get a bit more for Richarlison but in fairness to get nearly £110m for him and Gordon combined is unreal business.

Big summer ahead for him but I trust him, especially if he's not meddled and allowed to just do the job.
Between Jan 2022 and the opening of the summer window theres a lot of changes. I'll omit Gana as hes 34 in September but it does seem to be a targeted approach.

Pickford
Patterson Tarkowski Branthwaite Myko
Garner Onana
Iwobi Doucoure McNeil
DCL
Keeper: Same
Defence: Totally changed
Midfield: Totally changed
Attacking midfield: 1/3 new
Centre forward: Same

Were actually 3 players away from a new outfield.

If we stay up he'll have gotten away with the disasterous January window. Needs to continue with the focus on u23 players with high potential.

Tarkowski, Garner, Onana and McNeil were astute signings.

Vinagre a backup, Gana a stopgap and Maupay a cheap £12mil punt.

Numbers wise hes done very well but the January window points to the need for a great summer.

You are absolutely right.

That is a very unpopular opinion.

Like I say though I can’t lay any blame at his feet for January. He also only came in February 2022, he’s had one real window last summer, I don’t think any DoF in the world could’ve gotten anything close to a satisfactory January window here a few months ago.

Utterly impossible job.

A satisfactory January window for us would've meant basically any half-competent striker on loan.

Teams did that, but it's been said that no one wanted to come to Everton, allegedly.

And by "allegedly" there I mean it's absolutely made up and we didn't try at all.

Coady won’t sign on perm. I rather keep Mina and sell both Holgate and Keane.
