2022/23 Kevin Thelwell

It's astounding to me that some think he's so incompetent that he doesn't recognise the urgency or importance of attacking reinforcements that's so glaringly obvious to every single one of us.

Do they think Thelwell is oblivious, and even dumber than them?

Of course he knows we need forwards, but he is judged on the outcomes. So far he has prioritised other positions, has allowed the sale of a key player to drag into the last week of the window, and has left us with the worst forward options in the division.

It's now 25 August and things are looking a bit chaotic from the outside. If he doesn't make significant additions to the squad in the next 7 days then he has utterly failed and left us very vulnerable.

Has he? Or has he just got the easier deals out of the way? Signing Tarkowski was easier than attempting to buy the best striker we can possibly attract.

That's hardly on him. Chelsea have come in with an insane offer we didn't solicit. Would you rather we'd sold for 20 million less last week?

So give him the 7 days.

It's not difficult.

But by all means, if you prefer flailing about in a panic on an Internet message board, thinking you know how to do his job better than him, then you fill your boots.

To be fair it has to be the right player at the right price.
We don’t have the financial latitude or the attraction to just reach out and acquire any player who we would want.
Signing unsuitable or sub standard players for short term fixes just damages us in the long term.

He started off with a plan and everything seemed to be going fine but the last few weeks have been absolutely shambolic tbh. After almost getting relegated last season and then having a full summer transfer window knowing we need another proper striker, how can we not have a striker in when we are now 2 days away from our 4th game of the season and sitting 4th from bottom with no wins whatsoever. There is no acceptable excuse.

It is an absolute disgrace and we shouldn't be accepting it. The sack the board placards should be out at every single match.

Bravo

I don't think I know better than him but I absolutely think the window has been a total failure. I don't judge people in football against myself because that would be a bit silly.

We've needed a forward since the minute we sold Richarlison. They don't deserve any excuses and the fact people are so annoyed at criticism of them, shows how low our standards are. No other established top flight club our size would accept this sort of rubbish and going into a season with not a single centre forward available.

And on Gordon, we've needed to set a figure and a deadline for a while now. This should not be dragging to the end of the window. We can't sell on deadline day and then have no time to reinvest.

I'm not giving them a single excuse because they have been incompetent and shambolic for years. I hoped things would change this summer but nothing changed. The fact people think we've had a good summer is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in all my years following Everton.

….he’s paid a lot of money to identify the best talent available at the price we have.

He took a gamble on DCL remaining fit, he has to be culpable for allowing us to start a season in top flight football without an effective striker. There are no excuses, it’s a debacle.

It's difficult to be a Director of Football at a club that needs major surgery and has a tiny financial envelope in which to operate.

On the other hand, it's easy to criticise that Director of Football from your armchair.

It's not difficult to acquire a forward when you sell a player for 60m

Unless you have your priorities all wrong

I can't believe I'm having to defend my opinion that the club should have tried replacing our 60m forward with another forward. What a world lol

Is it any wonder the club is in such a mess.

….no it’s not.

You have a spend envelope to work within & you prioritise. Do you bring in two largely defensive left sided players whilst the team remains without an effective attacker?

He needs criticising. We are just about to go into our 4th game of the season with someone who looks like he is on loan from macdonalds leading the front line while wondering why we are win-less. He has had an entire window to get someone in. The window did not start 3 weeks ago.

It won't happen

The amount of happy clapping and heads in the sand in this thread is enough to tell you that

Of course it's difficult to find the right player. Even if nothing else, you're complaining yourself about us losing Gordon late in the window. Do you think all other clubs are just cool with that, that they'll sell whatever player we want at our valuation?

That's not the argument. If you're going to engage, please do so on the terms of the argument as presented - not a fictional argument you're framing for yourself.

You're smooth-braining this debate by making everything seem simple.

It's insanely complicated.

It's complicated but we pay professionals very highly to have plans and strategies in place. We've known for months Richy would be sold, so to go over 8 weeks without a replacement is just incompetence. With Gordon there has to be a firm deadline for when he stays or goes, and then we need to stick to it.

Your argument is we should not criticise because it's a hard job. My argument is that they are employed to find solutions to difficult problems, not to try hard. If you had told me on 30 June that on 25 August we would not have signed a forward, I would have been truly gobsmacked.
