I would not be surprised if we end up getting young players priced between 5-12 mill, who are relatively unknown. This seems to be his modus operandi. This approach would be in line with our ability to do busines in regards to the ffp.

Massive summer for Thelwell still. He was hired for his talent of finding bargains and he needs to deliver. Make or break transfer window for him. He needs to get it spot on

Here are the spend numbers for other clubs in January to compare to our net profit of 40m.

We gained 95 million on Southampton

Gained 75 million on Leeds

Gained 65 million on Leicester

And we stayed up.

Gained 90m on Bournemouth, 115m on wolves (numbers don’t include 40m Cunha obligation), and so on.

Yes, things were sweatier than they should have been, and maybe our lack of spending was as much necessity than planning, but ultimately in a couple of years time when we are clearing financial / FFP difficulty just as half the league is hitting it, this is why.

These figures must be wrong because Liverpool haven’t spent any money, Everton have spent 500 MILLION, and Southampton Leicester and Leeds are all really good at recruitment according to this forum.

Thelwell shouldn’t be doing any player recruiting now, he’s an area manager. If Kenwright can also have his desk, writing materials, phone, lanyard, door name plate, bulbous swollen grid on Goodison and anything else removed which he thinks makes him a cog in the process that will also be helpful and crucial.

it’s all on Dan “Patsy“ Purdy’s watch now people.

Played Russian Roulette this season and somehow didn't blow the club's brains out. He's got away with one for sure, whether by deliberate frugality or sheer incompetence, the club has brought in lots of revenue through player sales and simultaneously retained its top-flight status.

So when it's all said and done, for his first full season it's job (not very well) done.

Considering this club gave an absolute chocolate teapot in Marcel Brands three whole years, a Board position, and then another three-year contract even when it was clear to anyone with a brain that he was either totally incompetent or an empty suit (depending on whether you believe our DoF's hold any real power) - so Thelwell will be here for a while yet and we have to get used to it.

The fanbase is rightfully sick and tired of these relegation battles and won't tolerate another, so he can't afford any more gambles - he simply has to improve this club from the ground up. He's bloody lucky that he will have an opportunity to do so, but what an opportunity to turn his career here around.

Over to you, Kopite Kev. Do some bits.

What does this even mean?

How have we gained £95m on Southampton? Are you talking about our net spend to theirs over both windows?

We didn’t spend anything because we posted loses above the recommended £105m.

It was not some savvy move by the Kopite

Good old Dan who was Cheif Scout under Brands and booted to the curb by a fat odious Kopite

I’m talking about net spend in January. Southampton spent 55m and we received 40m. So we gained 95m on them.

To look at it another way when you factor in the generally accepted 100m loss from relegation, even if Southampton had spent their way out of it at our expense they’d still only be 5m ahead on paper. Whereas now we’re 195m ahead.

Who knows to what extent not spending the Gordon was forced or a choice. My point in general is that chucking money about in January rarely makes things better rather than financially worse.

That’s not how it works mate

Dunno why people are pretending he's some transfer guru who is gonna have a great summer all of a sudden.

Players we were linked with in Jan:
Ouattara 22.5 million. 1 Goal
Sulemana 25 million. 2 goals
Rutter 28 million 0 goals
Tall Paul 18 million 0 goals
Andre Ayew Free 0 goals
Orsic 6 million 0 goals
Cunha 45 million. 2 goals
Danny Ings 12 million 2 goals
Danjuma Loan 1 goal
Schade 22 million. 0 goals
Mudryk 70 million 0 goals

If you wanna include the other swings and misses you can add that Beto and Sarr who went on to score 3 goals each for Udinese and Watford after we bid for 30 mill for both. Arnautovic and Dembele both did nothing after January either. McNeil and Doucoure outscored the lot of them.

Until the board changes, it’s hard to know how good he is/could be. If they’re interfering in recruitment, then he’s not being allowed to do his job properly and you can’t clearly point the finger at him.

All we can hope for at the moment is that we get a clear out at the top before next season and that in the transfer window Thelwell brings in some relatively cheap players to improve the squad sufficiently to get us to mid-table.

If we get change at the top and he still only brings in more Maupays, then we get Doucore to replicate his Bournemouth goal while kicking him out the door.
