If the DoF model doesn’t work for us then neither will the managers buying the players work either because both processes suffer with some of our board members being too cosy with agents or influencers and they interfere too much.
In the current game, the Head Coach has an awful lot of complexity; as well as being busy. In my opinion, you definitely need a DoF. You're spot-on, mate.

It hasn’t worked at Everton, certainly.

But the problem isn’t with the concept, it’s with the execution.

Either we’ve recruited the wrong DoFs, or they’ve been inhibited from doing their jobs – or both.

Putting the manager in charge of all transfers only works if they are capable of it, and only if they are given the chance to build and manage their team over more seasons than most are given in the modern game.

I’d argue that managers no longer have the time or space to build a squad to play their way. Instead, it’s incumbent on clubs to separately curate their squads and find managers to fit the club’s identified playing style.

For that, the DoF system needs to be made to work - and that’s exactly what we’ve failed to do.
It doesn't matter what policy you choose to follow (DoF or manager + head of recruitment) neither is going to work when you have a guy like Kenwright in the background who wants the final say on transfers, and even more so when you have a chancer like Joorabchian hovering in the background.

Meanwhile, in Kev's office...

The people saying that he made some good signings last season are aware the club were nearly relegated for the second time in two years on the last day of the season aren’t they?
There’s 2 positivity camps with Thelwell.

On one side you have the Zats of the world; overly confident that buying young players like Garner, Onana and McNeil resolve all issues. The thought process is that will develop as one and become an all conquering outfit, even though they are, at best, average footballers. The hope is they develop

On the side, you have the wannabe edge lords. The forum clown is a perfect example of this

The DoF model doesn’t work at all imo
I’ve said many times on here you can’t have a DoF and then let managers cherry pick certain players, that’s why where we are today.

Players signed should be suitable for this manager and any other future managers he may choose.
