In his defence, you’ve got to remember how bad last seasons team was. We realistically needed a whole new defence, exception of Paterson. A whole new midfield. New wide forwards. We had to do all that with no money to spend.

An impossible task. Given what he had to work with, he did well to get Coady and Tarks, big upgrade on our centre backs. Did well to get Gana and Onana, we at least compete in midfield now.

Given we lost Richie’s goals and there isn’t anyone else in the team other than DCL who regularly threatens to hit 5 goals a season - signing McNeil was odd with his scoring record and looks like we could have spent that money better.

It’s tough, this is turning out as expected. We’ve improved defence and midfield but are so light up top we’ll really struggle to score. So it’s proving. Need to struggle through this season and get to the transfer window. Next window we won’t have to sort the entire team. Defence and centre mid is reasonable, can focus on attacking recruits.

When you struggle to score or create, and you sold your only real threat, to not replace him and add an attacking threat is criminal in my eyes.

The Tarkowski deal was done, Coady was a nice add later in the day. But the 2 months in between and delivering McNeil then a last minute swoop for Maupay….ooof major major failure

He’s a young lad and his goal against Southampton was good and yes there is a but, my heart sank when we signed NcNeil for that money, clearly wasn’t what’s required here given his track record.

I’m still not sure if we have replaced Richarlison or not either.
Well clearly we've not replaced Richy in any like-for-like way. McNeil isn't a goal scorer and wasn't brought in to be one. His job is create the chances and provide the crosses in the box for DCL to finish. That's the masterplan methinks.

Coady is a good signing, but we're not brining a CB in on loan if Mina and Godfrey don't pick up significant injuries in the first game. McNeil comes down to being available for a few million upfront, whereas our other targets were not. With McNeil, I think it's a case of we needed someone, he's what we could afford, and it was better than nothing; whilst ticking as many boxes of what the club was looking for as possible.
