2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

I will also add that Bobble and his mate Benj have been v consistent on the narrative that Thelwell had very little to do with Maupay's signing and that he was overruled by the chairman and owner

Yeah but tbf no DoF worth their salt and confident in their own ability and that of the recruitment team they have chosen sits there and lets Barron Von Greenback in the boardroom overrule/interfere with what they are doing. He should have been up there and telling them "Don't like my choices, then fine I will quit and find someone who does" The role is about planning and strategy, you can't have others sticking their noses in imo.

So they are saying that all the good signings were Thelwell, and all the bad ones were not his fault

Well, they're saying he wanted other players than Maupay but he was overruled

I've not seen them suggest that about others (including Beto)

I stand to be corrected but, in the Thelwell regime at least, I think Maupay is the only one there's been a dispute about who was responsible - although this happened far more in the Brands and Walsh regimes

I agree, but we know that Moshiri did that consistently under Brands and Walsh, so Thelwell must have known what he was signing up for

I'm sure that DoFs just like people in normal jobs have mortgages and bills to pay so makes no sense for him to walk out if he's overruled on a player .

Would you quit if your boss went against your advice ?

Hasn't this been the criticism all over the whole Moshiri era though?
Yet apart from Brands (eventually), they all have took there wages and carried on.

That interview the other day was cringe, its like the person in work who spends the whole day telling people how hard they work, but they actually are just doing standard tasks and complaining.

Well, yeah, but I'm not sure what point you're making?

I guess the crux of it is from my pov that if you're judging Thelwell purely on transfers (which is only part of his role and he has a recruitment team who actually recommend these players), then there's some evidence to suggest that Maupay has an asterix next to his name when you're debating it.

In the same breath, I'd point out that I think it's a fairly safe bet to pin the loans of Coady and Vinagre almost solely on him (not that either were particularly disastrous)

Edit - On the interview. Sort of agree, but at the same time we have people complaining about a lack of transparency from him and him rarely telling us what's going on etc. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The role will never work if multiple people are involved though, its why its always been such a mess here. He is on £2m+ a year so I highly doubt paying the mortgage and bills are much of a concern unless he lives in a place the size of Buckingham Palace mate and we are not including money he made from Wolves and New York RB. As for me, yes I have walked out from a job before because the boss asked me to do something, I put a fair amount of time and effort into it then he started to interfere with it all so I told him he was better doing it himself then!

100% agree - I would like to see how the fella performs in an environment where he isn't going to face interference from a lunatic owner, a Chairman who thinks he's the only person in the world who knows what's right for Everton and being able to actually spend money like a normal club.

It's a source of major irritation to me that we've employed people in this role who are meant to be expert football people and not let them get on with the job properly.

I hope its different under TFG as they tend to take a backseat with everything so there will always be some sort of Dof/Sporting Director here regardless of whether the happy clappers want Moyes in full control, that just isn't ever going to happen imo. If we are going to employ the role then lets actually let the person do their job properly (like you say)

Right, so you would walk out of 2m a year because your boss made you do a couple things, and probably said "you'll get to chose the next one, this decision is mine".

I dont think so.
