2017/18 Kieran Dowell

I saw bits of his play for Forest against Villa tonight, very much carrying on in the same vein for me. He created a couple of great chances with crosses from that sublime left foot he has and looked class at times , but often he just faded out and didn't move into the right space to receive the ball, so he didn't get it. At least he lasted the 90 minutes tonight.

It's been quiet in here recently, and, I must confess, I've not been following how Forest and Kieran are getting on, so, to save me googling it, can someone bring us up to speed ?

I think the general feeling is that he hasn't kicked on YET from a very promising start. For now most people seem ok with it as it's early days, he is young, and has shown that he can do things pretty much no other player at this level can.

It is amazing how players get a reputation and that then colours our view of everything they do. I googled the exact phrase "drifts in and out of games" an the first 4 results referenced:

Zlatan
Davids
Higuain
Dowell

The Davids reference from Roy Keane's dog's autobiography, so you may feel you want to discount a fictional dog's opinion

I thought he was quite good against villa. Lots of typical Dowell flourishes in tight spaces, a near goal that I can't believe didn't go in, and two exceptional crosses that should have resulted in at least one goal.

It's fine for top players to drift in and out of games, but when they're "in" the game, they have to make a much bigger impact than the players around them to make up for the "out" times. Zlatan certainly does that.

As the season goes on, I'd hope that at Championship level, Dowell can really show that he's able to stamp his authority on a game. If he can do that in the Championship, then I'm pretty sure he'll be in the first team squad with us next season and playing regularly.

He is quality and will come back a much better player having benefitting from playing regular competitive football. Lad is nailed on to be an Everton great...I hope.

Looking at the match highlights you'd have to say Kieran's goal wasn't up there with those sweetly struck left footers he can do , but was probably one of his cleverest with the defender diving across to prevent the ball being struck left he shifted so that he dug it into the ground to the right . Nice one, and he was obviously delighted. Contributions like this are so important in ensuring he gets what he needs , regular starts in the Championship, a season of this will do him the world of good.
