2017/18 Kieran Dowell

Clearly Dowell has an excellent understanding with Kenny. Interestingly he's the 'opposite' type of player to Lennon.

Which do you think would be the more effective partnership?

Personally id go with Dowell over Lennon every single time. My view is they wide players have to pose a threat or else you play on the back foot.

Pickford...kicks to Bolasie
Bolasie rolls the ball under his foot
Bolasie kicks the ball and runs down the line
Head down Bolasie does a step over and looks inside
Seeing no-one he runs further down the line
Head down again...he punts the ball randomly towards the area

Where does the ball go?

Answer A: To the opposition team
Answer B: A random area of the pitch
Answer C: To the 1 or 2 outnumbered Everton forwards

Answers on a postcard.

Answer on the postcard is that Everton are not getting enough bodies in the box when the cross comes in, that's not Bolasie's fault

Getting him back in now would be stupid. Let him have the season away on loan, grow as a player and see how he does during pre-season.

A very tidy player with a great left peg however does look a bit lightweight.

Given that Allardyce is currently the manager i agree but the only other doubt on this at the minute is that the manager who brought him in has just been sacked so a new manager coming in may not fancy him and then he could be wasting his time.

You are being finicky Zat
The great white hope tag is a Boxing term that in football terms is applied to any young player that shows promise it regardless of race.
Too many have flattered to deceive in the past both at our club and others.
Rodwell Jeffers Green are just some of our previous Great White Hopes.
Davies if not careful is heading in the same direction
I remember all the hype over McCarthy at 16 and Real and Barca being interested.
Never really made the top level yet has he.
For those of a certain vintage I give you Peter Marinello at Arsenal @Eggs

Twas a joke...think McCarthy went kaput with injuries and asked to play box to box....

That’s a Zat team for the PL

:o

Milk cup is under 14 and under 16.

Could be 13-16 then I guess?

I actually think the presence of Rooney is a barrier at the moment for Dowell

He's clearly a number 10, or at a push playing from the right cutting in on his left foot

We have Sigurdsson and Rooney as senior players in the number 10 role and Rooney will still be here next season (and let's be fair, he's scored 11 goals already this season, so you couldn't say he's been a complete failure)

Dowell is getting huge benefit from this loan spell and all the exposure to first team football he is getting, but if we bring him back next season, the concern is that he comes in as 3rd choice at number 10 behind Sigurdsson and Rooney and stagnates

It *might* be better to get him a loan to a Premier League club next season and then bring him back when Rooney leaves at the end of his contract in 2019

2 options next season...loan him somewhere he will start.
Use him as rotation getting at least 20 games.

For me, Rooney is a deep lying playmaker now...Sigurdsson is an attacking midfielder...still room for dowell centrally as well as vlasic...both rotating in.

..I think you make some very valid points. As I said yesterday, he’s already behind a few in the queue for the no10 spot but he has come through the ranks as a right sided midfielder (a position he had in the England youth World Cup winning team). The other bonus is that he has already formed a genuine partnership with Kenny. We know that the two players blend and compliment each other. I genuinely feel he’s the best right sided option we have on the staff at the moment but that could change if other players come in. Onyekuru is another consideration, although I think he mainly plays from the left.

I’d like Allardyce to be asked if he’s following the progress of young loanees, especially given that this was part of Royle’s remit. I’m not predicting any have a future with us but Dowell, Williams and Connolly are impressing at Championship level. They can do no more than that.

Kenny / Dowell you feel is our best option on the right? I think Dowell could be a bit like beckham in the attacking sense...nice balance to lookman on the left.

When you played in the park, lets say you found yourself on the right wing...with no teammates nearby.

Would you pop a cross into the box?

You wood, wooden you?
I am really hopeful that Dowell is as exciting as Barkley and Rooney but fulfillls his potential.
Each of Dowell, Davies, Beni, Kenny, DCL, Vlasic and Lookman have got some really exciting potential, and if we keep them together it will be super cool

When times were really dark in the 90s and 00s I used to imagine EFC teams in the future, like 'if we just bought a couple of players it would look like this' type of thing. Now there have never been so many exciting young players to build a team with. Its so hard to keep players together long enough now, and thats just down the management of the club. Only Spurs seem to be doing that now with any long term plan, but since Fergie's Man U and Arsenals early 00s team, nobody has been into squad or team building for the long-term. We used to talk of 'his next team' for Fergie and Wenger, now the teams just change from window to window. I remember Song - Wilshere- Fabregas looked like a potentially amazing midfield 3 at Arsenal, and like that, if they ever played together, Davies-Dowell-Beni would be a great combination of the future, with very different but complementary styles

3 years from now, why not:

Pickford

Kenny/ Coleman
Holgate
Keane
a new LB

Beni
Davies
Dowell

Lookman
Vlasic
DCL

Henry
Gylfi
Mcarthy
Gana
Funes Mori
Bolasie

all older pros in reserve or rotation

Ironically if we were still skint, all these lads would have a legitimate shot to make it here. As soon as we have our best batch of legitimate prospects - maybe ever - we get an owner with cash who wants to spend it.

If McCarthy & Mori are still at Everton in 3 yrs i will have slashed my wrists

..I do think Dowell is currently the best right midfield option in the current squad. We’ve talked lots about partnerships and players who compliment each other and it’s a given that him and Kenny form a fine blend. He’s scored 8 championship goals from midfield in the Championship which is a fine return for any midfielder. He will offer threat in this Everton side. He’s not the best defensively but he’s much better than Vlasic (who i’m also a fan of).

You will note that I say in this current squad. He might well find himself further back in the queue when players come back from injury or transfers arrive.
