2017/18 Kieran Dowell

It's okay to think this kid is special and ALSO thinking it's a good idea for him to play under the pressures and crowds of the championship for a season. It's a big jump from the U23s to the Championship environment-wise, so let him handle that first. He's 20 years old.

And he isn't going to play. Rooney and Gylfi are better central options than Dowell. Klaassen is also still here, and if they can't find space for him to get in the squad, they aren't going to find space for Dowell. Davies, Vlasic, too.

2000 minutes in the Championship vs. minimal minutes in the big squad? Seems like a no brainer to me.

THAT BEING SAID, he should be counted on to contribute next year. Klaassen wasn't need to begin with, but would rather see younger guys with potential getting opportunities as backups rather than Davy Klaassen.

He needs to be back here for the remainder of the season.

How can it be right that a creative force like this is not recalled?

And the arguments for him to stay there are ridiculous. Does he look at all a different proposition to when he was here or with England? He's not going to be running round chasing balls anytime soon. He can do exactly what he's done for Forest at this level.
To answer your question “ Does he look a different proposition .....? “ Yes he does. By your own admission at the start of the season you’d only seen him twice, so good spot on limited viewing. I’ve seen most of the televised England U20s games he’s played in and I can’t recall him lasting longer than 70 mins. He always faded in the 2nd half and was replaced. It was similar when he joined Forest , it took him a few months to get played for the full 90. Now he’s playing 90mins in most matches. He’s doing what he’s asked to do defensively , he’s not great at tracking back but he does it , as well as covering positions on defensive corners . And he’s more involved than he was when he first went there. Throughout all this he’s retained and improved the deft left foot he’s always had.

So “YES” he does look like a different proposition . He still needs to improve in areas to be considered for regular PL starts , but hey he’s 20 and reality is that of England’s U20s World Cup winners only DCL seems to be starting in the PL regularly - it’s a tough step up at this age. Forest have been poor the past few months and Dowell too has had a blip , but he’s still got the talent to shine in games.

It’s an argument that can’t be proved. You will say that any improvement he makes could have been made with us . Maybe , yes , maybe no. It looks like he will remain at Forest for the rest of the season. In which case he will continue to get a good amount of starts , even when he plays poorly , and he does at times, he’s done enough in the past to mean you can’t drop him for long . He’ll return to us a far better player than when he left, I can wait for that but I can also understand an argument that when watching some of the dire stuff we produce at times seeing him produce a bit of magic for us would be welcome.

It's a no from me at least for the next 2 years until he has improved more. We have seen that DCL, Jon Joe, Davis, luk man, - all the young ones - they try their hardest but are at the moment not good enough to be in a team thats wants to challenge for top 6.

How much does he need to improve before he is given a chance? he is currently top goalscorer for them from midfield and second when it comes to assists. I would keep him out on loan till the end of the season then assess his progress after that.
Everytime 'luk man' has played he has looked boss so take him out of the equation, same with JonJoe, i think he has been brilliant this season tbh I agree though that DCL is currently not ready to be starting games for us week in week out. Davies is going through a bad patch atm but would start him ahead of Schneiderlin any day of the week. Would love to see Would love to see all our young players given more of a chance considering we have nothing to play for this season, especially Lookman, Vlasic and Baningime.

Better than that Chelsea scumbag, always has been.

lol

No he's not. He hasn't even proved he can play in the top flight yet. Get a grip.

If there’s one thing I’d change about him it’s his hair.

He’s got a lovey head of hair there but really needs some product in it to show off what it really could be.

Loads of potential.

He should take notes from Garbutt who is equally blessed with fantastic hair density.

There's only one basis for any decision to recall Dowell (or any other player on loan): would he contribute something we haven't got?

The answer for me is a firm 'yes'.

Get him back.

This will end in tears with Dowell suffering an injury before the season ends. I'd rather he was here, and if he was here and experienced an injury at least he'll have gotten it contributing to our team and not some other team. WTF are this club playing at? Forced to play dour, clueless football when this lad is our player, a class act and ready to step in?

It's absolutely 'kin daft. No other club in our position would operate like this.

JJ says Hi.;)

Back to Kieran, it was always going to be a case of time will tell whether a loan was the right option. We've all seen the effects on young players of poor loans and there was a danger that this may not have worked out. But I'm happy to say it has, at least so far anyway.

Difficult to predict what would have happened had he stayed with the first team. There is an argument to say that young players would have been better off away from Goodison given all the turmoil. But I happen to believe that our youngsters have been the one saving grace this season and all of them, with the possible exception of Davies, will have learnt a tremendous lot. Dowell would, I believe, have been given some opportunity had he been here, especially with Unsworth in charge for a few games, and would probably have done well given he scores his goal from nowhere.

On the whole though, I think the amount of game time he's getting at Forest will prove more beneficial to Kieran long term and he'll return to the club all the better for the experience.

I hope we then give him an opportunity with the first team squad next season. I say hope because, whilst there's no doubting Kierans ability or that wand of a left foot, he isn't what you would call a modern style footballer. Football fans, and dare I say Evertonians in particular, have a habit of focusing on what a player can't do, and I can just see the criticism Dowell's languid style will invoke amongst our faithful parkenders.
