2017/18 Kieran Dowell

I watched the highlights of the Wolves v Forest match, goal was well struck , low and on the volley but seemed to take a deflection wrong footing the gk. One noticeable feature was the development of his delivery at set piece free kicks, he nearly set up two goals with them. We know he can score from free kicks but now he’s taking them from out wide and whipping them in , another string to his bow . He did the same in the Cup game against Arsenal , setting up the first Forest goal. In previous teams like for us and England he was rarely given the chance to take them , now as one of their best players he’s the go to man for Forest to take these kicks. Watching our kids playing in the Championship is sadly becoming the highlight of the weekend’s football.

He’s still not ready lads, remember that hysteria over Gylfis stats. They don’t show the other aspects of the game, and he’s still far too inconsistent in games and disappearing when things are going tough.

..whether it’s Dowell or somebody else you do need quality footballers who have the ability to make something happen. They might not alway be in the game but they have the ability to positively affect it. Often busy players flatter to deceive. They run round lots but don’t impact the game.

Whilst I generally agree, the top end players will still always have the ability to stamp their authority on a game. What I’ve seen of him this reminds me a lot of Gylfi last year. Flashes of brilliance with little or no impact when the game isn’t going his way, so I think people get a little bit carried away thinking he’ll come back and change our fortunes.

Now if it’s be the summer just gone and it was a case of keeping Dowell or buying Gylfi, I’d have kept Dowell because he’d probably have had the same input

Think that the accent is on team - you can have lots of players running around a lot but most games would end 0-0. You need the creative spark to make things happen but shouldn't necessarily expect those type of players to make crunching tackles and cover huge distances. Think Ozil and the abuse he gets from some quarters, we could do with that spark of magic and maybe Dowell could provide it in a couple of years time - another season on loan would be my choice.

That's English footballs problem, it's a case of graft over talent.
In Italy Spain or Germany, dowells lack of running around wouldn't be a problem.
The breakneck speed of the game over here means it's built for the hendersons, milners and mcarthys of the football world. Even Davies fits this mould.
It makes for good watchable games but does little for the development of footballing talent. The pure footballers have almost disappeared from the game in the top flight.

Think back about the amount of unathletic players who got by on talent, le tissier, merson, etc

They wouldn't get near a premierleague side these days.

..the problem with extended loans over more than one season is that players contracts run down. I think decisions have to be made with these youngsters, we can’t hold on to the indefinitely when other players are coming through and transfers coming in.

At the end of this season, Dowell should come back or be sold. I think that’s the reality.

..i know he plays centrally at Forest but i’d have kept Dowell because I think he was the best right sided option we had. That situation has probably changed since the arrival of Walcott.
