That's English footballs problem, it's a case of graft over talent.
In Italy Spain or Germany, dowells lack of running around wouldn't be a problem.
Think back about the amount of unathletic players who got by on talent, le tissier, merson, etc
.
The pleasing thing for me about Dowell at Forest is the amount of “running around” he now does. No he’s never going to be as energetic as Davies, they’re different types of players, but Dowell now is going back and covering posts at corners etc but perhaps more meaningful is he is “running smarter”.
One of the frustrations those of us who watched the streamed U23s games always had was his lack of involvement, then he’d pop up with a worldly with his left foot and all was forgiven . In many ways he coasted in the U23s because of his talent. And I’m not talking about his lack of tracking back or lack of tackling , he faded out of games because he failed to move to positions where he received the ball , so he was by passed. Now from what I can see he is running more, covering more ground and is moving into positions now where he receives the ball more so has more of an impact. Sure he’ll still have bad games and no doubt somebody will show a stat where his tackle count is woeful, but I see a genuine improvement this season in his running and involvement.

That is why he is on loan to gain experience and from what you report it is working.

Interestingly in the games I've watched he finds small pockets of space but the forrest players don't get the ball into him quickly enough - he needs a quick little give and go and then receive the ball facing the opponents goal - he can then make things happen.

A fine call as to when he needs to come back to help his development although with BFS as manager I'd keep him well away until he's gone.

I watched Tom Davis in the warm up for the pre-season friendlies out in Dresden a couple of years ago, his footballing skills were well behind the rest of the squad but no doubt his running stats were in order. For me a prime candidate for a season long loan in the Championship so that the ratio can become better balanced.

The breakneck speed of the game over here means it's built for the hendersons, milners and mcarthys of the football world. Even Davies fits this mould.
It makes for good watchable games but does little for the development of footballing talent. The pure footballers have almost disappeared from the game in the top flight.

They wouldn't get near a premierleague side these days.

I don’t think that’s true, at least at a national team level.

They may not be cloggers, but players like Iniesta, De Rossi, Muller etc. work incredibly hard off the ball. And the ones who don’t like Ozil and Pirlo are in a completely different dimension to Kieran Dowell.

I agree that this country places too much emphasis on physicality compared to Spain, for example. But Germany won the last World Cup with a squad that maybe wasn’t even top 5 on paper talent wise. Being organised, being clever and doing the running when it’s required is half the battle won.

“The plan all along was a season-long loan and there’s no rush,” he said. “I’m enjoying my football loads here and I don’t think there is any point in going back if I’m doing well and thriving here. “There’s no rush, like I say. “Hopefully when I go back to Everton I’ll get the chance to push for the first-team then.”

..he’s played there coming through the ranks and did so for the England side that won the World Cup. The bonus for me is that we know he has a really good partnership with Kenny, the two players really compliment each other.
Throw Davies and Holgate into the conundrum and I think that would be a pretty damn good right hand side to our team in a couple of years Eggs. Kenny RB, Holgate RCB, Davies RDM and Dowell RAM.

Good article that.

The posh scouser (or Wool if you prefer:)) has a good head on his shoulders and you can see that intelligence on the pitch too. Combine that with the wand he has in his left foot and you have to blind not to see the potential there.

All we need now is a manager who is prepared to focus on what the player can do, rather than worry about what he doesn't do, and I think we're in business.

Had my concerns when he went out on loan, but it's worked out well for him and he'll benefit further from not having Allardyce coaching him daily too. Hopefully will have a big part to play next season.

Don't get me wrong im not black and white on this , I don't think players like dowell should just stand there waiting for the ball. Doing little else. They all should track back and play to their position and role. what I mean is with a player like him the emphasis should be on him letting his talent grow. Without the added pressure of expecting him to play like a box to box midfielder. There are players in the side to fill that role.

I'm using him as an example to make a general point.

Just to point out, all the players you rightly mentioned have been playing top level for a decade give or take a few years and the work rate has surely developed alongside their talent. I don't think they were as capable defensively when they had dowells limited experience.
I'm not putting him in their bracket, it's just as a comparison
