I watched him playing for England u-21s against Romania a few weeks ago and he looked fantastic.

He's technically excellent, intelligent and has great vision. He isn't a big physical athletic workhorse, never will be.

We need to look at what players can do, not what they can't. In a system that suits him, with good coaching he could be a gem.

Correct. Utter bollocks expecting this lad to chase back.

Inestia, Silva, De Bryne, Xavi, continho ect all have tremendous work rate. I get your point you don’t want him hanging around fullback but work rate and fitness is pretty important for modern footy we can’t really afford to carry passengers

It's a matter of getting the balance/proportions right. I'm sure Guardiola didn't want Iniesta and Silva pinning back their ears and racing back toward their own goal as much as they wanted them on the ball and in the opposition half facing that way and doing damage.

I dont think anyone wants a player in this day and age to simply stop after being dispossessed in the opposition half, but we do have to draw the line at expecting as much of a defensive game as they offer going forward...which is what a lot of his critics seem to suggest we should expect.

I just want him to perform in a game, just once.

Give me a shout if that ever happens.

In the meantime keep comparing him to Iniesta.

People make excuses for Gylfi about why he isn't performing in one aspect or another. Yet, there are a lot of people here deriding a kid with potential because "he doesn't track back" or whatever.

Like said above, let's use what he can do and figure out a way to make it work rather than pointing out what he doesn't do as a stick to beat him with because there are PLENTY of other players on the pitch that could be hit with a similar stick.

It's a reasonable point, but the lad isn't a bone-idle fatty ambling around either. Workhorses are ten a penny, it's easier to get Dowell to improve his pressing than it is to give some grafter Dowell's gifts.

If Allardyce had stayed on, that would have been the end for Dowell. There is no player at the club who is more the antithesis of BFS.

And there's no higher praise to be fair.

Players like Dowell will never make it with a fan base like ours. Way too many on here, and in the stands, haven't got the patience or are unable to contemplate football played a certain way. I've seen recently how quick some have turned on Davies.

Its defo the fans fault that John Paul Dowell wont make it.

Come on lads, the lad has hardly played for us and most of are comparing him to KDB, Iniesta and David Silva.

Have a word hey, its not the negative people that ruin players, its the massive expection people heap on them.

Ive no idea if Dowell will make it, not till he breaks into our team, only then should we judge the lad.
