Koeman: "Barkley looking for a new challenge"

Or put another way, he is the victim of his own inability to deliver consistently on the pitch in the last 12 months. The 'heads-up' was there right from the off, yet he ignored all the signs.

I'm sick of reading of how wonderful he is, and how we will suffer without him. The England Manager read the signs correctly (and didn't select him), and so did Koeman. The lad has talent, but doesn't have a bloody clue as to how to apply it consistently over a season. If you want a parallel example: Barkley v. Alli of Spurs. No contest - the Spurs lad leave him standing in terms of consistency and application on the pitch game after game after game...
This is a fair point I'd say. Contract could and maybe should have been sorted before or just after Martinez left. Board could've sorted it before Koeman got here. But they didn't and its clear Koeman and Barkley, for whatever reason, have differences.
Thars where I've been a bit disappointed with Ross. To be a top player you have to stand up and be counted. Take the initiative and stamp your authority on the situation.Do the business and Manager can't leave you out. For me, its a shame he's going, and that we won't see him fully fulfill his potenial here. But he wants to go, so thats it. And overall the signs are good for us over the next 2 or 3 seasons if we continue to develop. I don't think we'll struggle without him, but he could have contributed. Hopefully, its him who regrets his decision to leave.

That should never happen. With lesser talent who wont make such a dent into club finances it might be forgivable. But this lad is family silver and my suspicion is that there was no attempt by the manager to keep Barkley beyond the end of this season and therefore the club didn't act earlier and forcefully enough to tie him down. Basically the club officers and board have been weak. Now the club lose out on at least £20M-£30M in fees on Barkley....and could get nothing still if Barkley sees out this contract here.

Gross irresponsibility.

If we're having a go at anybody here it should be Ross. He didn't have to keep the club hanging on for months for a decision on his contract. He knows the score : he knows that he is worth millions to his boyhood club. And that he can extend his contract and still be able to force a sale at any point in the future. In short, he's screwed us over.

Ross's contract extension will have been on the table for at least 12 months, maybe more. How do I know that ? Because Koeman regarded him as a key player and other key players have received the same treatment.

It's also a fact of life that players do keep clubs hanging on for decisions in these types of negotiations - presumably because they like to keep their options open. It's not uncommon, we see it all the time. There's every reason to think that Koeman was hoping to persuade Ross to stay. The public deadlines that he gave him to get it sorted by the end of the season are very strong evidence that Ross didn't tell the club that he wanted to leave until April / May.

If we sell him in August for 25 million or so, how much of a loss will that actually be ? We can't say we've missed out on £50m unless there was a realistic possibility that some club would have been willing to invest that kind of money in him. And I think there's real doubt given his inconsistent form whether even Man United or Spurs would have been willing to take that chance.

You couldn't make it up. i suspect Ross will go to Spurs for 30-35 mill. We spend 45-48 on Gylfi. Basically Spurs get a massive discount on a 50 mill pound player with a 5 mill cherry on top from us.

You have to respect the way Spurs go about things.

Spurs will effectively get one of the best young players in the country for about £15M-£20M when the Sigurdsson sell on is taken into account. With today's prices and how expensive quality young English talent is that is a first rate mugging. You do indeed have to take your hat off to Levy. He's probably in contact with Swansea's new owners telling them they can both win big if they stay resolute over Sigurdsson.

Interesting also is that he has been linked with a move back to Spurs. lol

How could that happen? A club like Spurs looking to save on cash at a time when they have a stadium to pay for would walk away from a full priced Barkley...and so would other clubs at the top. At a £20M-£30M price tag there isn't a top side in the country who wouldn't be interested.

You and I dont know anything of the contract negotiations. All we can do is speculate whether the club were offering anything serious to Barkley to get him to stay. IMO they were made aware he was not in the manager's plans and they have gone along with it to this point where they could even lose him for nothing now.

I can see the headline now "Everton Gazump Spurs" - Blues get pay back on Sissoko affair. We would be made up with ourselves.

*Barkley wins player of the year at Spurs.
