Kone Signs on 3 Year Deal

Generally considered Anchebe's best ever season for us and we create a lot of chances for our forwards, so 7 isn't that great, tbf. I'd expect Kone to thrive on that better chance creation at Everton.
Depends which way you want to look at it. You could say 7 goals and 4 assists in a side many on here described as "negative" because of the previous managers dour safety first tactics, is a pretty decent stat from only 19 games.

Where as 11 goals and 5 assists in 30 odd games playing in a side praised for it's attacking style under Martinez, arguably isn't much more impressive.

Depends which side of the fence you're sitting and which way you'd like to spin it.

Anichebe has had a fitness problem throughout his career so far, and last season was the first season he's put a decent run of games together, and it showed in much better performances.

Last season's stats actually show that IF, Anichebe stayed fit and played regularly, Kone wouldn't be that much of a big upgrade on what we already have that some on here are suggesting.

£5m is not a lot of money in the current climate. It might be a lot of money to us, but if we can get 3 or 4 good seasons from him £5m will be a good investment.

£5million for a player who:
- Has 1 in 3 ratio, minus that spell at Seville (which he didn't play properly) is down to 1 in 2.5
- He scored 11 goals for a team that got relegated
- He's very fast (something Jelavic and Anichebe are not)
- He's powerful

Even if he converts half the chances that were squandered last year, thats going to be an extra 15 points, at minimum, and then the £5m outlay for a 30 year old is insignificant.

He won't gain us 15 points. Think you're rating him better than he is.

I'm in the same mindset, we needed another Striker and he fits the bill.

I do hope, our other signings are young superstars in the making though.

We support Everton FOOTBALL Club mate, not The Everton School of Business.

At the end of the day every football is a business. Sadly only the top clubs make net money from playing, selling shirts, and rights management, and thus we need to use our players as our main investment tool (i.e. sell to buy) to keep ourselves in business (and without external investment, which, fairly, the board has no responsibility to make if at all).

Agree, I thought Martinez would be a bit more adventurous when it come to signings, but he obviously rates Kone, and if he gives us a different option and contributes a decent amount of goals, I won't complain.

Were people genuinely thinking Martinez' first signing would be some £20M player from an unproven league?

Utter ****e. Any manager, no matter what club theyre at, goes for the players he knows he can trust, who will do as theyre told, who play his system. MOyes could go for any player in the world yet Baines is the first player United have bid for. Soft arse across the park paid £15M for the 'welsh Xavi'!

These two signings are Martinezs no brainers. Regardless of fee, he rates Kone and likes his attitude. In terms of a gamble, its not a massive one.

The signings he makes after this are what he will be judged on and he knows it.

Weve not even kicked a ball yet and people are questioning our manager and his signings. Ive never heard so much bollocks.

I wonder if we are targeting a proven player like Kone for 5m due to expecting someone from the academy to come through soon -- Green/Long.

What is the point of having highly rated youngsters if we are not planning or expecting them to make the grade.

If we get 3 solid years from Kone hopefully that will be enough time for one of them to step up. By purchasing a 10m+ striker who would be considered a gamble I can sort of understand this approach. Plus hopefully he will take some of the burden off Jelavic who I hope will return to his early 2012 form under Martinez.

Roberto's first signings were always going to be players he knows and trusts, i dont know why people thought otherwise.
The big signings will come when we get the big money in, i thought that was obvious?

the team have two strikers already if you are looking for depth. the team needs quality strikers, not more average aging strikers.

two strikers that to be honest have more to prove than Kone has. I don't think this signing rules out a quality striker when the right one comes along. I am not that excited by it but think there needs to be three or four signings that don't excite me but mean its not a nightmare every time a key player is injured. seems far too early for some of the messages of doom

Football finances are difficult to assess at the best of times.

We made a profit on Lucas Neil who was a stop gap ageing Centre half.

We made a huge loss on Yakubu who was an established striker in his mid 20's.

Showing my age but Andy Gray was considered past it when we signed him.
Kone offers something different to the other 2 strikers. Perhaps his pace will help to move players out of position for Mirallas to exploit.
