I've been planning to watch Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire, Wim Wenders film) for at least 10 years now and finally got round to it.
Pros:
- some of the best camera work, compositions and black/white stock i've ever seen
- fascinating if you're a Berliner...loads of shots of areas both familiar and utterly transformed
- loving calm vibes, replete with Bruno Ganz's iconic longing gaze (Ganz...he of the Hitler meme)
- film as moving poem...if you're in the mood, very German-expressionist
- Blixa Bargeld spotted! And Nick Cave...
Cons:
- i honestly thought it would've benefitted from more cohesive characters & plot
- Peter Falk playing himself felt a bit in-jokery
- the coming together at the bar of the 'fallen' angel & the dancer was too poetic as to be almost laughable
7/10 i think is fair, so a good film on balance, but only recommended for fans of arty cinema.
