Last Film You Watched

Paul Schrader's new one; First Reformed.

Loved it, one of the best films I have seen in a while.

The Friends Of Eddie Coyle (1973)

An on form and world weary Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle dealing in the less glamorous end of organised crime. All set in a very rundown looking 1970's Boston. The story isn't really that gripping but works amply well as a vehicle for excellent performances, dialogue, mood and location. Loved it.
The book is great - I love the author's style. Crime noir with great plot development driven by dialogue and conversation. George V. Higgins, former US Assistant Attorney in Boston.

Cage..webp

Caught this one on Film Four, the other night. A gritty piece of 'blue collar' Americana.
Never rated Cage as an actor, but he's excellent here, with a restrained and powerful performance.

I knew I was going to like it after the first few mins, I ended up liking it more and more. And under two hours!
Powerful stuff, but I thought the last couple of minutes were a bit soap opera-ish and telegraphed. Having said that it was brilliantly filmed and reminded me of Manchester by the Sea at times. My initial thoughts are a few pages back and I’ve not reflected on it since so thanks for making me think !.

Unfriended dark web - not as bad as I thought it was going to be 6/10

Mission Impossible Fallout - typical MI film, nothing new but thought it was massively overhyped. 7.5/10

Solo - good god what a way to ruin a franchise. A poor Harrison Ford impersonation and a worse storyline. The bird from GoT is fit but can’t act. Almost as bad as the Last Jedi 3/10

Ended up watching something about Mary last night because there was nothing on and it was on tv, only seen it once before about 20 years ago, was alright, had some laughs, bit random at times. You never see Matt Dillon in anything these days either do you

Anyone seen Blackkklansman ?

Black Klansman
Important story that needs to be told in an era where the far right is becoming accepted and normalised.
But as a film, it's alright and nothing more.
Really? I thought it was superb. Good performances, looks fantastic and the tonal shifts are expertly done and would have felt erratic in less gifted hands. And the final few frames left the cinema in absolute silence.
Just been to see it, thought it was very good.
Agreed. I loved it. Great performances all round and wonderfully shot.
Blackklansman
What a film, a true masterpiece. Honestly one of the most powerful, but funny, films I have ever seen in my life.

A few. I really liked it and may even go for a second viewing.

Kinell, looks like I'm on my own with Blackklansman then haha.

Going to give that another watch when I can, see if I was missing anything.

I enjoyed it, just didn't really grab me in a way it has other people.

American Animals (2018)

Four young men plot to rob a collection of very valuable books from Transylvania University library. A true story acted out but interspersed with interviews and appearances from the actual men. Though a true tale it's deliberately blurred by unreliable narrative and becomes darker as events spiral.

Interesting and well executed but maybe lacks balance by giving plenty of time to statements of penance and regret with only a single interviewee strongly condemning their actions and importantly their selfish motivations.
