Last Film You Watched

Apart from the paying public though lol

It was pretty obvious what was happening and was a bit of a slapstick towards the end imo

It was obvious,no don't think it ever intended not to be. Not all films are about what happens at the end.

The cinematography, score and underlying anxiety in the film were great.

You'd love Scanners then, Michael Ironside and Patrick McGoohan, insanely brilliant hokum.

Scanners is one of those films that I like despite it not being that good purely because I saw it for the first time as a young teen and that VHS cover on the video rental shelves and the head exploding scene are iconic of a certain era and genre to me.

It's the same reason that I really like Bloodsport despite every scene outside the fight scenes being utterly terrible on all levels.

In the Shadow of the Moon on Netflix. Started off brilliantly, but unfortunately about halfway through it begins to derail. Not much of a pay off at the end either. Still quite enjoyed it overall, but could’ve turned out much better than it did.

JOKER.

Amazing film. Phoenix is mesmerising, terrifying, wholly on par with Nicholson and Ledger. I loved his take on the character. It’s not a copy of their performances, the film in general is much subtler in it’s comic approach - probably one for the @Prevenger17 type of date night with no costumes or pew pewing to high brow afterwards but keeps you gripped to your seat. Great design, set somewhere in Gotham in the 70’s - 90’s and brilliant cinematography. The Direction is so good, probably a film they should have led with for the DCU, but lessons have been learned that’s for sure @Gwladysstreetlad

THE BEACH BUM

Good grief what a disaster. Avoid at all costs.

THE HUNGER

Caught this the other day, beautifully shot but a little empty. The lighting and sets are the stars of the show, the incredible photography by Steven Goldblatt influenced the cinematography of that decade.

Joker - WOW! It's the film of the year and just give Joaquin Phoenix the Oscar now plus he maybe THE best Joker in fact he is.

Taxi Driver meets King of Comedy.

Marvel WISH they could create a film anywhere near this.

Simply put if you want to sell toys best of luck but they have nothing on DC.

I'm very excited to see it. It's abundantly clear that DC stink at shared universes, their best films have all been standalone, director-led stories. Hopefully Joker teaches them that they can both compete with Marvel and offer a legitimate alternative cinematic experience to the big budget shared-universe formula.

Yes and come on. They could easily do this, it’s just not their World. DC should have been doing this all along. There’s plenty room for both.

DC and Warner lacked unified leadership, a singular direction... hopefully this one does well - it’s an incredibly simple, powerful story and Phoenix does actually knock it out of the park.

I can’t give it any higher praise than saying it’s as good as the trailers, and they were some of the best cut movie trailers I’ve ever seen.

The sooner they drop their EU for good, the better. They were always playing catch-up with Marvel, who had years to refine their formula and a well plotted long-term plan. DC were left churning out cobbled-together nonsense, with Wonder Woman being the only decent result imo. And even that was down to Gadot and Pine's chemistry as opposed to a decent script or direction.

As much as I make fun of the pew-pews, I like more Marvel films than I dislike, the Cap America films in particular. I have become jaded and uninterested in most of their product now for sure, as there is a lot of them, but I'd love if DC just stuck to this route. There isn't really enough room in most people's lives for another shared universe, but films like Nolan's Batman and, from all reports, this new Joker film can provide a different experience, which only benefits the cinema-goer.

Sadly with Disney, Marvel will never make a decent movie with just storytelling.

Loads of films with sell on toys, break into the Chinese market for extra revenue, build a new rollercoaster park or reboot a character from their original origin - YES.

How good is it to have a storyline about a comic-book character that doesn't need 100% of CGI or a plotline which very very very loosely ties a conclusion to a multitude of average films.

Marvel have unbelievable wealth in characters but they will never make a comic-book film anywhere near what DC are doing.

I have more words.

Okay so yes, wonderful, wonderful film. Oscar for Joaquin is in the bag and I agree with those that say that was the best Joker performance so far. I don't really think it's fair to compare that to Ledger/Nicholson however because their iterations of the character are when he's in full swing Joker mode where this isn't that. I found the soundtrack to be perfect, the amount of violence was just right as any more would be a distraction and tasteless. I actually found the film quite heartbreaking and admittedly teared up a few times during the flick. Personally that's why it was the best Joker performance to date as I could actually empathise the character as he evolved. One gripe I've always had with other Joker's, including Ledger's, was that as wonderful as they were I could just never really picture where this character has come from if that makes sense.

Definitely going to watch it a second (and probably third or fourth time). Couple of questions in it I couldn't answer and for the love of all things please don't make a bloody sequel!

That's what I thought of when I saw the trailer
