Dead Presidents (1995)
A film which doesn’t get as much love as it should in my opinion.
Helmed by the Hughes brothers, of “Menace 2 Society” infamy, Dead Presidents is a strange beast. It is a War/Crime/Drama that perhaps tries to be TOO ambitious.
It’s a look at the black experience of the late 60’s through to early 70’s, taking in the Vietnam War, the Black Power/civil rights movement, Black Panthers, Drug addiction, PTSD, ghetto life etc.
Plenty of Blaxploitation stereotypes and tropes – a “right on” female Black Panther, a smoothly dressed shark-faced pimp character, some funky 70’s clothing and various low-life brothers hustling in basement bars and pool-rooms.
There is some jaw-dropping violence, including a very messy and unfortunate end for a grunt in the ‘Nam jungle scenes when he gets his thingy..... just watch it alright?
Some very smart location shooting and a great recreation of the Bronx ‘hood in its grimy 70’s prime. A few unsettling nightmare sequences as well.
Plus…. It’s got an absolute SCORCHER of a soundtrack, with smooth soul cuts from Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Sly and the family Stone, Curtis Mayfield amongst many others.
If you’ve not seen this – please do make an effort, it’s a cool movie that history seems to have forgotten.
I always thought the Cutty character – the pimp – was badass, proper cool… it’s worth it just for him…
“Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh. Hey, young-blood. Bringin' in the groceries, huh? Lord, have mercy.
Man, I remember when I was married. I used to love to bring home the groceries.
Made me feel real good.
Like a man. Know what I mean?”
