Last Film You Watched

Missed the first 3 or 4mins of it.

Didnt get into it at all...just 'watched' the screen rather than being 'taken into and absorbed' by the film.

However, everything about it seemed good on the surface...but the one huge problem is that i didnt care what happened or the characters...

No emotion throughout the film, tiny bit of action...lots of talking and nothing really happening.

Lots of people checking the time after an hour onwards...at the end lots of disappointed mumblings.

Could have been a 10...probably a 5 or a 6.
Yep, agree with that.

Not terrible, not wow. Just another way to use up a large chunk of your day.

I stand by what I said about the gloom. I had a glance at my watch and it was just under an hr until we had the first shots In daylight. Apart from two other short scenes at sunset the whole thing was set in gloomy drizzle. I get Gotham isn't a happy place, but atmosphere can be suggested rather than dumped from a great height.

Oh, and don't have a giant Pepsi in the first 20 min. By the time Bruce was having his heart to heart with Alfred I was absolutely bursting.

6ish out of ten.

Edit. Batmobile is rubbish.

There’s no way I can give Batman any less than full marks ignoring any bias I may have. Wonderful score, cinematography & casting. Could have watched 10 hours of it. We finally got the neo-noir detective Batman we’ve been waiting for.

Frankly some of the criticisms I’ve read online and on here have blown my mind.

Probably cause people are expecting yet another comic book film and not a dark crime thriller.
Watch the film for what it is, not what you thought it should be.

can you watch it as a stand alone/know relatively little about batman etc?

I've loved Batman ever since I was a young kid back in the 60's, even the camp version that was on telly. I think the darker, sinister, element to today's Batman films is perfect for those of us who've grown up, but still like to indulge in fantasy films that have an edge to them. I've not seen the new movie yet, but I'm confident I'll like it.

I think anyone complaining it’s too dark or too gloomy or not enough action have no history with the character whatsoever. This new film is set over 5 days and he’s a nighttime vigilante. Do people think he works the streets 9-5 catching criminals in broad daylight or something? Clue is in the word ‘bat’. It’s a detective film for the worlds greatest detective.

Didn't realise you were Bob Kane. Will share some of my thoughts on the film in spoiler tags now people have seen it.

Pattinson is a good Batman but a poor Bruce Wayne. This is an issue with the writing rather than him as an actor. Why is constantly such a prick to Alfred? Basically every scene they have together he constantly reminds him he isn't a Wayne/isn't his father. The film does nothing to explain this so we are left to assume he is just a bit of a bellend. I just didn't really care about this Bruce Wayne which made me care less about Batman.

Also, the detective stuff is pretty weak. They basically solve all the riddles really quickly and then they still get caught out at the end.

Thought the Riddler's justification for his crimes was pretty weak. Also wasn't a huge fan of Dano's performance. His weird speaking normally and then GETTING REALLY LOUD for one sentence was just odd.

Thought Zoe Kravitz was really good but some of the dialogue they gave her was cringeworthy. ("Why don't we go after some of those CEO/Hedgefund types" for example). On the whole though I thought she was great. Hope they bring her back.

Colin Farell was good and it seems as though he'll be around for the sequel that I assume will happen.

Action scenes were really good. Loved the scene which is only lit by the gunfire as he just hammers everyone. As mentioned, I think Pattinson is a good Batman. I just hope that in any potential sequel they do a bit to develop the Bruce Wayne side of his character.

Very funny. You have your opinions, I have mine.

I think people need to remember this is a very early (and young) Brucec Wayne, 2 years back into Gotham and his "project" so he's still full of rage and regret over not being able to save his parents. I suspect the strained relationship with Alfred comes from the moody angry version of Batman we're given. I don't think the film needs to explain any of this considering how much Batman content precedes it. We got an origin story in Batman Begins but it went from 0-60 in one film whereas this is going from 0-20 first. I don't really agree the detective stuff is weak though? Again, he's 2 years into being Batman and being the detective. I think my favourite thing about the film was they didn't make him so ridiculously overpowered and unbeatable physically and intellectually like they normally do in superhero films. He needs to look raw and vulnerable at this point in his "career".

Agree on the Riddler justification part, I can understand why he'd want revenge and also the story leaned very heavily into Batman inspiring people to act. (I think as well Bruce saying near the start he's been doing it 2 years and Gotham is getting worse is another fuel to his fire and rage at a lack of results). I did love Dano's acting though; he plays the perfect creep. Also a very different Riddler to what people are used to and especially those that have only seen Jim Carey in green spandex.

Colin Farrell was one of my standouts; you would not have known it was him whatsoever if you never saw the cast list. Excited to see where they go with that. I actually was most worried about John Turturro as Falcone but was pleasantly surprised at his sinister side after so many goofy roles before this.

In regards to the bold I think what will happen next is this because if you remember the very end scene on top of the concert stadium thing he said he realises he needs to do more to help Gotham which goes hand-in-hand with the new mayor saying he (Bruce) isn't doing enough and also at the beginning when Alfred tells him he needs to care more about the Wayne Enterprises side of thing. I think we'll see more of his Bruce Wayne mask come into play in any sequel leaning into his philanthropist side and fake playboy side. Right now he is purely Batman fighting back against Gotham and in future we'll see Batman and Bruce fight back.

I still understand some of the criticisms but I've also seen some I just cannot wrap my head round. Even read this review last night which I hope is purely satire: https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/humourless-and-stale-the-batman-reviewed

Edit: Last point, I didn't really like the Joker part, I think they need to maybe try a Batman series without another one.

Very much a graffic comics film than comic book.

I thought it was a perfect "origin" for Pattinson's Batman because he wasn't the finished superhero yet.

Catwoman was good and so hot but Penguin and Ridder stole the show for me.

It was a very real world and definitely the best detective version of Batman but I thought trailers stole a bit of the mystery of the film.

I'd say it no "The Dark Knight" but it's on par with Batman Begins in terms of establishing the character.

It has been given some great reviews but I'd say it's a 7/8

Yeh this popped in my head watching. Like, there's no way I could ever have not watched the teaser & trailer but I wish I hadn't.

My real problem with The Batman

The main music for Batman sounded exactly like Darth Vader's theme

Just annoyed me so much

Watch the film for what it is, not what you thought it should be.

Disagree with this. I came in with no expectations and found it to be an 'unthrilling' non-thriller.

The plot and story were fine, the actual 'dark' theme was fine....i was also fine with the lighting and the actors. The problem was that I didnt actually 'care' about any of the characters whatsoever. Its hard to be 'pulled into a film when you dont really care about the characters and the riddles are solved in seconds + Batman got shot so many times and even the stuffing wasnt really knocked out of him apart from once. The cinema vibe where I watched it was pretty bored.

Your spoiler is spot on in addition to my comments above and below.

what was that narrative all about? Kind of out of the blue and off putting to add that in a Batman movie. Id say it was the only thing that actually pulled me out of a coma watching it.

For me, i think it would have been better to focus on Catwomans story with Batman more in the background...then as she leaves it goes more into Batman.

We now know that he's a rude obnoxious genius who is indestructable.

Not a patch on Bale.

Who was in the cell next to the villain at the end?
