The Last Castle (2001)
Drab, by numbers prison movie starring Robert Redford as a goody two shoes General locked up in army chokey for some non-descript military technicality. Redford’s character comes up against James Gandolfini’s aggrieved, sadistic commandant who makes it his mission to break Redford’s resolve. It’s a lame and washed-out attempt at a story line that’s been done many times before (and done better) – see Stallone and Sutherland in 1989’s Lock Up for a spikier version that’s just more fun. The Last Castle is definitely watchable but overall it’s a waste of two good actors who at this point were at the top of their game (although Delroy Lindo pops up which is always a treat). 5/10
