Last Film You Watched



Few films watched this week.

The Creator - really well made movie, and a great “world building” concept. Thought the first hour was great, but gradually lost my interest, and it had the potential to be much more thoughtful than it ended up being. Some real clunky moments in it, and wasn’t convinced by Washington’s performance.

The Killer - Typical well shot Fincher movie. I always like his movies, but always think they have a weird detached, unemotional feel to them. It felt quite meta, that the film was about a detached, unemotional, clinical killer. Decent.

Reminiscence - lashed it on as had great cast - Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson, but wow, couldn’t get past 40 minutes of this stinker. Was genuinely dreadful. But Ferguson looked nice in a blue dress.

I watched The Creator this afternoon and thought it was dreadful. It borrowed a whole bunch of movie cliches from other movies, whether the army grunt thing from Aliens, the being swines to savage Asian villages from Platoon, the future being generally grim from Mad Max, or everything being set in the dark from Bladerunner. Throw in generic movie cliches like the "walkie talkie" failing when important information needed to be relayed or the "security men" arsing about so missing the protagonist going past on the video screen and it just seemed like mindless drivel. It even had the Jesus narrative of the "creator" having a child who would save humanity. Ffs, if this is what they're capable of I wish the scriptwriters would have stayed on strike.

Yeah, didn’t think it was ‘dreadful’ (as had watched Reminiscence earlier in the week). But though it looked great, and for me, it was moving along quite well for the first hour. It then got predictable and boring, and threw away any goodwill I had for it. It had the bones of a decent idea, but didn’t do anything interesting with it.

It was nice that America was the "villain", especially given the protagonist was basically China. That must have been quite a hard sell to make to Hollywood. That they still felt the need to use classic tropes of Chinese still ploughing the paddies with the help of a buffalo in 2060 was a bit disappointing though. It almost had a Starship Troopers aspect to it, but I'm not sure it was actually a sci fi satire.

Definitely wasn’t satire. Think it was played completely straight.

I got a vibe of District 9 at times, due to the concept. But again, without any of the intelligence or satire of that or Starship Troopers.

I watched this tonight too. I missed it on Film 4 but found it on YouTube. I found it hard to hear the dialogue but you correct, not an uplifting film. I always get Paddy mixed up with Stephen Graham for some reason,
