Gladiator (2000)

Camp historical drama about this fella’s revenge against a tyrant emperor. Contains some cracking fight scenes, but the CGI is pretty dodgy and it isn’t deep enough to be as serious as it is.

Gladiator 2.

The first word that sprung to mind when leaving was “ disappointing “.

The opening hour is all over the place, Paul Mescal plays the lead as though he’s on stage and not film.

Even if you watched it, trying not to compare it to the original, it’s impossible, due to the frequent references to the original all the way through the film.

It’s not a bad film, just not as good as it could’ve been.

I was thinking this wasnt out to Dec. Apparently out on Nov 20th here.

So 6/10 for you? What would you give the original?

The original is one of my favourite films, so I’m massively biased.

Paul Mescal in the lead is the big problem ( imo ) as he plays his part as though he’s in a Shakespearean play.

Pedro Pascal and Connie Neilson carry the whole film, with an honourable mention to Lior Raz ( Fauda) too.

Denzil Washington almost reprises his role from American Gangster ( not his fault, that’s the script )

Like I said, not a bad film, just not what it could’ve been 7/10.

Things Will Be Different.

A brither and sister have robbed some money and lay low in an alternate dimension where time is effectively stopped. Interesting premise. Reading the plot I guessed that Benson and Moorhouse were somewhat involved even though they didn't direct. I liked the lead performances, particularly the girl who played Sid, but in the end, I just didn't understand it. I generally don't like time travel as a plot device unless it's a closed loop. I think this was supposed to be that, but it didn't stick the landing. It was alright, the director didn't need to explain everything, but felt he at least needed to explain more
Sounds right up my alley.

Saw a review for 'Black Dog' from somewhere that recommended it. A man and a dog film.

Watched it.

Bloody miserable, depressing film, character is a million miles away from being in any way relatable or endearing. Hell, even the dog was meh, and I LOVE dogs.

Only good thing was the few minutes of music.

Would not recommend.

Just been to see Anora. Hadn’t heard of it but saw it was getting pretty amazing reviews so went into it largely blind other than the basic plot.

Thought it was great. Mikey Madison is brilliant as the lead and the supporting cast all put in strong performances too. Definitely worth seeing if you get the chance.
