Mid90s (2018)

Tight little well paced drama for Jonah Hill’s directorial debut.

It tells the story of a young kid (Stevie/Sunburn) longing to find sanctuary from his dysfunctional homelife amongst a group of older teen skateboarders in 1990s Los Angeles. Misunderstood by his promiscuous mother and brutally tormented by his older brother, the acceptance he experiences within the group helps him begin to see a path through life he had been hoping for.

Through themes of identity and belonging, the film plays family ties off against friendship bonds which (as to all teenagers) just seem to mean more. There are nice nods to other films; the scene where Sunburn’s mom chastises the group is reminiscent of Sean’s mum having words with the skinheads in This is England.

Funny and sad in equal measure, it’s also very pretty to look at with the vignette styling of its aspect ratio adding to its charm. If you enjoyed Lords of Dogtown then you should probably give this a whirl.

4 nosegrinds out of 5!

I'm gonna go out on a limb. It has it's flaws, and some of it makes even less sense than it's predecessors, even though I enjoyed a couple of the cheap laughs they went for, but T3 (in spite of the never before seen, mentioned, alluded to or used chest batteries) is actually ok. Especially the end, mission complete and the bombs start to fall in wide screen. Stahl weren't right but it couldn't be Furlong. The primitive first one is best, in all it's budget glory. T3 is practically Shakespeare in comparison with all the follow ons. Batman should never have got the call either, in that time frame it was a bad call.

The Substance.

Been saving this one, but holy moly I wasn’t expecting it to be as off the scale as it was 😲

Demi Moore was outstanding, as was the tango tanned Dennis Quaid, going full on Nic Cage as the TV executive.

Some truly uncomfortable stuff in this, as it portrays the brutal way the tv / film industry discards older stars.

A massive nod to the Elephant Man in the insane last act.

Recommended, but not for the faint hearted.
Margaret Qualley though...

I remember being pleasantly surprised by it. Obviously a big drop off from the first 2 but even Salvation and Genisys were entertaining enough considering the premise is increasingly convoluted and silly time-travelling killer robots and human resistance fighters getting up to all kinds of explosive japes.

And don't forget the series with Lena Headey as Sara Conner, which was also based on an alternative timeline.

Megalopolis. Take Francid Frod Copolla, inject him with Robert Altmans decaying DNA and remove brain. Add A Listers, don’t tell anybody what they’re doing, blindfold them, spin them around while telling them how amazing they are and let loose on the set. Sprinkle with a dash of oh I dont know maybe time travel and simmer for 50 years.

You should pitch this to dragons den.

Watched 2 older films last night that I have seen before but was bored so gave them another watch

Gotti - John travolta. Was ok, but so many gaps in the story, probably difficult to cram it all in to one film.

Charlie- Luke Goss. Again, so much more could have been included in this but wasn’t.

….i’m old enough to remember the first ‘Test Tube Baby’, Louise Brown, being born in 1978. It was controversial back then but IVF is where it is because of it. ‘Joy’ on Netflix is based on the story of those early days and I thought it was a decent watch.

I had a paper round back then and vividly remember the headlines as a delivered the papers. Funny how particular things stick in the memory

Willowstone was released 2 years ago on 2 December 2022 and needs less than 200 views to reach 150,000 views. If you've not seen it then please give it a watch.

This was written and directed by Tom who is a blue and stars Adelle is also a blue. And a little known fact.... the name Willowstone is a re-jig of Willaston (Cheshire) where Tom grew up.
