Last Film You Watched

Was dragged along today by the boy to see The Hobbit. Much better than I expected having suffered a considerable amount of elf and orc fatigue down the years after 2 previous instalments and 3 LOTR films. However, I can never understand why people think Martin Freeman, in all his various roles, is a good actor. His acting seems to consist of pulling a puzzled face and doing something of a sideways look. And that's it. Baffled.

Watched Predestination last night. Thought I was watching the wrong thing for about 40 mins! Pretty good, was a bit confusing, although that might be cos I wasn't paying complete attention.

A good friend did the costumes for that film. I watched it and really enjoyed it. I thought Sarah Snook actually gives one of the performances of the year in this one.

Last night I watched Nightcrawler, and i have to say... *spoilers maybe

Its the best film I've seen this year, hands down.

Coming from the Media Industry, this film NAILS it. It's fantastic. And nails it not in a way that on the surface this is what actually happens, but nails it in the sense of the characters motivations, drive, personal conflict and morbid obsessions. The devastating horror of reality is morbidly dissected as the film progresses, yet done with a tongue in cheek delivery.

The dynamic between Russo and Gylenhall is completely electric. The backdrops, the style, the soundtrack, if ever you've heard me moaning about 'Drive' - this film actually delivers, and it absorbed me into the aesthetic perfectly without demanding pretension.

Gylenhall can be a difficult animal to classify in the beginning but as the film unfolds he blossoms into beast. A jarring look at the American obsession with themselves, the way these characters bond with no moral compass anchors the film in a beautiful reflection which neither takes its self seriously nor apologises for the subject matter. I found myself caring about an unlikable leading man in so much as how he pushes himself to the limits with the cold calculation of psychopath but with the naive charm of Production Runner.

Russo has entered the Twilight of her Screen Sexuality but it might even be her strongest phase. She's magnificent. Fierce, Humble, as tough as old boots yet sassy and vulnerable. She's the epitome of the the 80's power woman in the modern world. Subtly outmaneuvered to her disgust and then physiologically overpowered her performance is captivating. Players like Riz Ahmed and Bill Paxton add a wonderful dimension to the film, each unwittingly experiencing wrath of the Protagonist and showing the consequences of trying to hinder an unstoppable force.

5 out of 5 from me. A Must Watch.
