Last Film You Watched

We might be different opinion, mate, but I don't trust any newer Star Treks. The Next-Gen films were mostly dumb formulaic action, tho' First Contact was at least fun. The reboot films are so so bad...there's no reason for them to exist other than making money. Such lazy lazy writing. No sci-fi at all.

The last Star Trek series: Enterprise, had a similar forfeit of creative ideas and at the beginning of each episode incredibly attacked us with the most cheesy Mum-rock song I've ever heard. Add the wet flannel of a captain and you've got awful everywhere.

Voyager had its moments, but again too much mumsy emoting. DS9 was the last decent Trek.

DS9 was most enjoyable. Voyager had 7 of 9 who is of course 10/10

For the next 3 films I have to sit through the first 3 Hunger Games as her indoors is dragging me to the cinema for the final one.

Any of yous enjoy these?

Yea good point....but he doesnt fall short on the badge, I was worried he would be cringeworthy in the film but thought he did ok
Yeah, dont usually like bellew but he was bearable and didnt look out of place considering its his first film.

Really good movie though just hope they dont start milking it dry with the sequels like the original rockys

Man from Earth is very good! The whole film is just dialogue in a room, but it's deep. 8/10.

I had high hopes for Europa Report: hard sci-fi found footage chasing life within our solar system. What can go wrong? Well, unfortunately the film-makers decided to abandon all drama by messing up how the continuity was presented. Then the big reveal at the end was merely a ripoff from a well-known sci-fi blockbuster series (spoiler tags no longer work for some reason). 5/10.

Quiet Earth is well worth watching. Really intriguing first half let down slightly by a formulaic second half. But still a good 7/10.

The 13th Floor. Forgettable & cheap but not bad while you actually sit through it. 5/10.

Primer. An intelligent take on Time Travel. Similar to Man from Earth in that it's dialogue-heavy, well worth a watch. 7/10.

Dark City. Haven't seen it in many yonks but remember quite enjoying the experience. 7/10, pending a rewatch.

The Fountain. Awful cheese. Makes emotional girls cry. Men looking for deep sci-fi will reach for the fast-forward button. Some nice visuals, tho'. 3/10.

Here's some of my favourite sci-fi which you might like:

1984: the John Hurt version of Orwell's prophetic novel. As essential as the book. 10/10.
2001: you've probably seen it. It's the best film of all time. 11/10.
Star Trek I (1979): hugely underrated proper Star Trek with an EPIC story. Rare case of the extended cut being better than the original. 9/10.
Star Trek VI (1991): if you enjoyed that skip to VI for the next best Star Trek: political machinations in a sci-fi setting. Clever. 9/10.
Fire in the Sky: not well known, but by gods this makes an impression. Best not to read/watch anything about it, go in blind. 9/10.
Transformers (1986): this animated classic is a universe away from the crap we get now. Some fantastic sci-fi ideas. 9/10.
Akira: another one you've probably seen. Far-out and wild. 8/10.
The Abyss: another case of the extended cut being superior. Proper hard sci-fi. 8/10.
Altered States: dark with much memorable dialogue. 8/10.
Enemy Mine: sci-fi version of Lost in the Pacific. Very well done. 8/10.
Edge of Tomorrow: Tom Cruise vehicle in very likeable action flick with time weirdness. 8/10.
Twelve Monkeys: you've probably seen it...Gilliam madness. 8/10.

Cheers guys. Actually some of the common ones I haven't actually seen. Love 12 Monkeys tho, and started Edge of Tomorrow but was knackered when I was watching it so had to stop half way thu :(

First was good then it just starts to drag as the second film is all about setting up the final one which they then split in two to make more money.

Hollywood is killing my enjoyment of films these last few years, I mean what idiot thought the hobbit over three films would be entertaining?

ugh! I sat through the first Hobbit and it hurt my eyes...the dwarves were so dull and samey, with an übertedious leader who was supposed to be the hero. Terrible cartoony action scenes too, and Gandalf looked bored and confused. Martin Freeman was the only decent thing in it. Didn't bother with the other two Hobbit films, tho' loved the book as a kid.

I agree millsy, modern Hollywood is churning out genuinely poor films, yet these films make record-breaking sums of money...so we're probably stuck with them.

Watched Contact with Jodie Foster last night. Parts of the film are needlessly mushy and it gets a bit trippy at the end. There are some big plot holes and some side story's that are a little ridiculous but the themes and overall message make for some very interesting watching if your interested in astrophysics etc. to be honest I only watched it because Neil Degrasse Tyson said it was one of his top 2 sci-fi films of all time haha

Donnie Darko last night...very good! Quality acting from all players, trippy directing and Lynchian vibe. Story was daft as all time travel stories are, but told in a nicely mysterious way.

I saw the original but hear the Director's Cut is a better bet as it adds scenes which help explain wtf is going on.

Directors Cut is CRAAAAAP. The additional stuff adds absolutely nothing, and they change loads of the songs for inferior ones. Avoid.

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence

One of the odd, most captivating films i have ever seen. So grim but really funny and very odd. Yet it ends on one the of most mundane lines ever, at a bus stop. 'Is it Wednesday? feels like a Thursday'.

Wow
