Last Film You Watched

Black comedies (such as Coen Brothers films) do pretty well/highly praised all round.

Well the Coen brothers rock, and tbf their movies are more than just comdies (just saying which does a disservice to "just" comedies :o), so they get more 'rep' with 'Hollywood' types imo.

I've written about 30 user reviews on IMDB...rated about 700 films if that's what you mean.

Really handy that site for film buffs to keep track, and I trust its average user ratings more than anything else on the web (Rotten Tomatoes is useless).

Ah, my misunderstanding. Yeah I love imdb, use it often.

Do you really? Transformers has 7.1. Once you have built a decent library, Criticker is of of the best i feel.

The first one was great! Gotta love a silly, bombastic action film every now and again, and it certainly delivers on that. Defo worth a 7 in my book.

Anyway, I'm really into 'strange' sci-fi/time travel movies atm. Made this watchlist on imdb: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur3783434/watchlist.

Anyone seen any of these?

Just downloaded all six star war films, gonna try and stay awake whilst watching them before going to the cinema to watch the seventh one & with all the hype its probably gonna be worse that spectre & that film was utter poop.

What we do for mainstream acceptance

Man from Earth is very good! The whole film is just dialogue in a room, but it's deep. 8/10.

I had high hopes for Europa Report: hard sci-fi found footage chasing life within our solar system. What can go wrong? Well, unfortunately the film-makers decided to abandon all drama by messing up how the continuity was presented. Then the big reveal at the end was merely a ripoff from a well-known sci-fi blockbuster series (spoiler tags no longer work for some reason). 5/10.

Quiet Earth is well worth watching. Really intriguing first half let down slightly by a formulaic second half. But still a good 7/10.

The 13th Floor. Forgettable & cheap but not bad while you actually sit through it. 5/10.

Primer. An intelligent take on Time Travel. Similar to Man from Earth in that it's dialogue-heavy, well worth a watch. 7/10.

Dark City. Haven't seen it in many yonks but remember quite enjoying the experience. 7/10, pending a rewatch.

The Fountain. Awful cheese. Makes emotional girls cry. Men looking for deep sci-fi will reach for the fast-forward button. Some nice visuals, tho'. 3/10.

Here's some of my favourite sci-fi which you might like:

1984: the John Hurt version of Orwell's prophetic novel. As essential as the book. 10/10.
2001: you've probably seen it. It's the best film of all time. 11/10.
Star Trek I (1979): hugely underrated proper Star Trek with an EPIC story. Rare case of the extended cut being better than the original. 9/10.
Star Trek VI (1991): if you enjoyed that skip to VI for the next best Star Trek: political machinations in a sci-fi setting. Clever. 9/10.
Fire in the Sky: not well known, but by gods this makes an impression. Best not to read/watch anything about it, go in blind. 9/10.
Transformers (1986): this animated classic is a universe away from the crap we get now. Some fantastic sci-fi ideas. 9/10.
Akira: another one you've probably seen. Far-out and wild. 8/10.
The Abyss: another case of the extended cut being superior. Proper hard sci-fi. 8/10.
Altered States: dark with much memorable dialogue. 8/10.
Enemy Mine: sci-fi version of Lost in the Pacific. Very well done. 8/10.
Edge of Tomorrow: Tom Cruise vehicle in very likeable action flick with time weirdness. 8/10.
Twelve Monkeys: you've probably seen it...Gilliam madness. 8/10.

Got round to rewatching There Will Be Blood for the first time since it came out. Still a rare 10/10.

Daniel Day-Lewis has a case for bagging the greatest acting performance in film history, even if some might consider the final act a bit hammy. Choi Min-sik might join him in a tiebreaker.

But it's not just DDL, Paul Dano is an excellent foil as the preacher, and the direction is high-end stunning, recalls Kubrick & Lean. As is the use of music: Arvo Pärt's Fratres was already one of my favourite pieces of music...put to great use here...and Jonny Greenwood's soundtrack is mesmerising. The story can be interpreted in different ways, for me it's all about the oilman's perspective.

We might be different opinion, mate, but I don't trust any newer Star Treks. The Next-Gen films were mostly dumb formulaic action, tho' First Contact was at least fun. The reboot films are so so bad...there's no reason for them to exist other than making money. Such lazy lazy writing. No sci-fi at all.

The last Star Trek series: Enterprise, had a similar forfeit of creative ideas and at the beginning of each episode incredibly attacked us with the most cheesy Mum-rock song I've ever heard. Add the wet flannel of a captain and you've got awful everywhere.

Voyager had its moments, but again too much mumsy emoting. DS9 was the last decent Trek.
