Baffled how it takes 4 weeks to look over somebodys books, yes im aware we are a massive "business" with lots of Ins and Outs, but surely a trained accountant could add up the 2 + 2 and get 6 within 24hours.

I like your math but it doesnt quite work that way. not quite.
My current job is with a financial firm worth a couple trillion. Mergers or sales at this level have less to do about actual dollars though it is important but more about the litigation. The party coming in is probably looking for huge contractual assurances from the outgoing and the outgoing will look to insure themselves from post-sale culpability.
