He almost made me think it was already done when he first made the story, well that's how I read at the time. Now he's saying it's alive but nothing more. Seemed like backtracking and covering to me but could be reading it wrong.

Hes saying its ongoing, as it should be, "we" are dealing with a multi million pound company with a loyal customer base, theres gonna be a lot of back and forth until a deal can be reached, at some point a deal will be reached or it wont, but given the amount of money involved, its unrealistic to expect both parties to enter a room and agree there and then.

"As far as I can tell - from the information I can gather - the deal is still alive."

Not really, if you look at the article again (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/football/article4648207.ece) he says the Americans are starting due dilligence which will finish at the end of January, at which point they'll decide whether to push on with the deal. In this update he says DD is over and they'll be going in for another round of talks with the deal still looking likely.
