The reason why Everton didn't get a penalty for a claim for a handball against Luke Ayling in the second half of their clash with Leeds United on Wednesday has been revealed.

The Blues won the match at Elland Road 2-1 thanks to strikes from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with Raphinha giving the hosts hope with a goal just after the break.

However, Carlo Ancelotti's side were denied what many supporters thought should have been a penalty in the second half of the encounter.

With Everton on the attack, a ball was played into the box and appeared to strike the outstretched arm of Leeds defender Ayling after he had initially jumped for a header.

At first it appeared that the incident had not been checked by VAR official Chris Kavanagh.

However, the ECHO understands that a potential handball was in fact checked, but it was deemed that the ball had struck Ayling too high on his arm to be given as a penalty.

The handball rule has caused controversy throughout the course of 2020/21 after a stricter ruling was introduced in the summer, but that has since been relaxed slightly.

But, contentious handball decisions have remained and this is the latest, with many Everton supporters who say multiple replays of the incident believing their side should have been awarded a spot-kick.

Hang on so you can now use your arm to play the ball?

Seems this is the guide for handball.

Its below the sleeve with his arm out wide as well lol, even on those pics the FA or whatever made a few months ago to say what is a pen and were the arm starts rubbish, I am certain that is a pen lol
I don't give a rats what interpretation they use. If that's not a hand ball then all bets are out the window and the game would be played in a different way. Blocks, controlling, goals getting smashed in with elbows. Makes me wanna pull my hair out. A ref getting something wrong in the moment is frustrating. A ref looking at something over and over again from all angles and still giving a wrong call is unacceptable. A job losing offence. Yet its happening every week. Its actually causing less and less outrage as it becomes the norm and its scary.

Hand ball rule change 419

I didn’t realise until it was mentioned on the commentary last night, that was only our second win there in 40 years ffs. Then I remembered the annual trudge there where we’d inevitably get done 1-0, my only happy memory of the place is the ‘95 Cup SF against Spurs. Made up we did them last night, can’t stand the club or their scummy fan base.

I prefer to look at it as 2 wins [Rooney game/last night] from last 3 league games there-the other a 1-1 draw lol
League Record there is W5 D12 L36 in total

Hahaha, I missed the Rooney win ffs. One year I went there on my own and sat on the Kop as I couldn’t get an away end ticket, I was thinking about it last night, just why did I used to do things like that? lol

I am delighted with the win at Leeds. Thee is no place at all for carping comments about passengers or so-called dramatic 2nd half fall off. Great team performance and apart from one burst of activity which Olsen dealt with in the second half Leeds hardly went near scoring again despite their and pressure. We missed the best chance. of the 2nd half.
