I would only offer him a new contract if there’s no money in the budget for a replacement and none of the academy players can step up in that position (they can’). He’s been a great pro for us but players tend to linger way past their sell-by date here and it annoys me. Towards the end look at how poor Howard was, Jags was, Coleman is etc.

Who would step

Who would step up from the academy? I think this is the model going forward and I’m all for it, however, I don’t think we currently have a player ready at LB?

I agree with this.

Unquestionably, he played well last week against United and he's been a great servant of the club, but I think too many people are getting carried away, again.

I suspect we'll being prioritising acquisitions in other positions during the summer, hence the contract talk; however, I do worry that we're often too sentimental.

Personally pleased about this, he’s been one of best players and seems to have a brain in his head. Good potential on the coaching and development side and I’m pleased we are keeping him in the fold. Still got an engine and some versatility, any decent team needs one or two around the place like him.

I know he wasn't a nice guy to a certain previous manager. And all because he wouldn't let him sign for United.
Bollocks, in the midst of the great Martinez slump, where we were oncourse to end our illustrious history of over half a century in the top flight, Baines called out Martinez for being a crap manager and questioned his methods and @davek has never got over it.

Suffice to say Baines was right and Martinez was on his bike shortly after...

If he resigns, it lets this summers budget get spent elsewhere.
It’s a no brainier for me as we,ll have Digne, Baines and Delph who can play there.

That brought a tear to my eye

The crap manager got us our best ever PL season, to Wembley and then managed a team to within a whisker of a World Cup final.

Martinez is a better manager than Baines was a LB, for sure. LBs can defend...something he's never done to a great standard or consistently all his career.

I'd take Baines defending over Bobby's notion of defending any day.

If 5th better than finishing 4th?

With Moyes's well drilled team at the back, the next season was true Martinez coaching and tactics, can't believe you still pine for him, had the best squad at the WC and still failed to deliver.
