I’ve got no problem with Baines although I thought cracks were beginning to show when he covered last season.
He needs replacing and Brands hasn’t replaced him.

There are far far far more pressing issues with the squad than a back up left back.

Keep Baines for another year as cover for Digne and then promote Lewis Gibson as the back up in a seasons time. Getting rave reviews at Fleetwood

Gibson's getting rave reviews at centre half though. Digne is like an auxillary winger, having someone like Gibson coming in to replace him changes the entire dynamic of the team.

I said yesterday, Baines is one of my all time favourite Everton players, but he's played a total of 11 league games in the last 2 seasons combined. He's only played 30 games once in the last 5 years. If something remotely serious was to happen to Digne, it's a big ask for him to come in at 36 and put a run of 10-15 games together, nevermind if (God forbid) we had a Gbamin type situation. Again, I understand people saying we've got other priorities, but what's going to change in the next 12 months that will make it easier to bring somebody else in?

Fair enough. I thought Gibson had been playing LB on loan but i havent actually watched any of the games

I am not happy but another year will not mess us up. Will perhaps be a much needed backup considereing the injuries we experience.

You make a very good point. Unfortunately I feel we are not in the position to start covering positions in case we get a long term injury to the first teamer. We need to fix the issues with our front line eleven before we start on the back up players.
Leighton Baines has been a favourite player for many Evertonians and I hope he gets a few games next season, performs well and ends his playing career coming on in the Cup Final and picking up his winners medal. Stuff of dreams.

Mad there’s any comments beyond the fact it’s a sensible move given he’s performed well enough when called upon recently and it buys us another year to focus our money on more pressing areas of the pitch.

Is it really that mad that people aren't sure having a 36 year old as a key part of your squad is a good idea? Particularly one who's likely to be on about £50k a week? I totally get the arguments for it, but let's not act like it's an absolute no brainer. In an ideal world he'd have gone 2 years ago and we'd have someone competing with Digne in the long term.

I've said before, we seem (both as a club and as fans) to have forgotten that there can be value in the market if you can be bothered to find it. Not everybody has to cost £20m+, it's disappointing that we haven't managed to identify a decent affordable left back over the last couple of years to take over from him.

Having a 36 year old as a key player wouldnt be a great move.....but as a backup left back theres nothing wrong with it IMO
