Agree that he wasnt the best defensively but he wouldnt have made it as a left midfielder, its a different skill set.

He's definitely the best in my lifetime but thats only since the 90s so not had loads to choose from
I'd agree since the 90s. He struggled against wingers like bolaisse who always seemed to have a great game against bainsey. Good player,. Good going forward, great partnership with pienaar and scored some great goals. I'd hope Everton would become a bit more ruthless and players like jags, baines were replaced when there careers where starting to fall off. I do wonder if they have plans for him to take a coaching role at the club

Jags was binned too early IMO!

He could have done a job for us this year...which probably says more about the fact that we didnt sign a replacement tho tbh

Always seems to be just Baines and Wilson who get mentioned when the question is brought up tho...

Well thats because they are the easy ones, the World Cup winner and the current/recent incumbent.

I prefer players like Van Den Hauwe at left back personally. I would also have Hinchcliffe ahead of him personally. That's not to say Baines is bad, of course he isn't/wasn't. I like my favoured players to win things though.

He may get into the top 5.
All a matter of opinion obviously, but my dad has hardly missed a game for 60 years and he reckons Baines is a very close second to Ray Wilson (not as good defensively but a much better all round footballer). He doesn't believe there's anybody else in that time frame who even comes into the conversation.

Fair enough.

I always find that a harsh way to judge a player tho.

If we're only judging on footballing ability that is not always reflected in trophies won, a lot of other factors contribute to it
