Having a 36 year old as a key player wouldnt be a great move.....but as a backup left back theres nothing wrong with it IMO
I said key part of the squad. Anyone who's one injury away from playing 38 games is a key part of the squad. That's ignoring the fact that you'd ideally like there to be some possibility that if your first choice is out of form you might just choose to swap them round. Digne's good, but i'm not sure he's so good that there should be no possibility of him ever losing his place in the side.

Hmm, wouldn't agree on the definition of 'key part of the squad' tbh, that tag suggests we would be screwed without him....which isnt really the case.

I do agree about Digne tho, but i actually think Baines played better than him when he got his chance this season. Digne has been well off the pace

Fair enough, maybe key doesn't quite describe it right, but I think that's just semantics. Important part of the squad if you prefer. Clearly it's quite important to have another left back, otherwise what are we even discussing? If we don't need someone to do his job then we definitely shouldn't give him a new contract. We do though, which is what i'm getting at.

I agree that he did pretty well when he played. It was 2 games though. He's only made 8 league starts in 2 years, and only made it to the end of 5 of them. My concern is that if we have to ask him to do more than that he might not be able to. That's really not ideal, either from a competition for places viewpoint, or from a potential injury one. Again, i'm not saying it's the worst thing ever, I just don't think it's a no brainer that everyone should be dead happy about either.

Is it really that mad that people aren't sure having a 36 year old as a key part of your squad is a good idea? Particularly one who's likely to be on about £50k a week? I totally get the arguments for it, but let's not act like it's an absolute no brainer. In an ideal world he'd have gone 2 years ago and we'd have someone competing with Digne in the long term.

I've said before, we seem (both as a club and as fans) to have forgotten that there can be value in the market if you can be bothered to find it. Not everybody has to cost £20m+, it's disappointing that we haven't managed to identify a decent affordable left back over the last couple of years to take over from him.

It's a no brainer given the financial uncertainty of a Covid19 affected market, Everton's FFP concerns and gaping holes in literally every position other than GK, upfront and LW.

That said I do hope we can look for a decent prospect younger LB, perhaps from League One / Championship and look to bring them in for a low fee in summer or next Jan.

Fair point.

I think we'll be willing to take a chance that Digne will stay fit most of the year.

And we always have Delph who can fill in there if Digne does get a bad injury and Baines cant play every game

I don't really see what covid has got to do with it to be honest. If you're talking about picking up someone from League One or the Championship then now is absolutely the time to do it, because in terms of the financial uncertainty of an affected market, they're the ones who are going to be desperate to accept any sort of half decent bid for a player. The reality of course, is that neither of us knows what the real impact of covid is going to be on Everton's finances, in either the short or long term.

Hopefully he accepted a wage drop as his on around 3.4 million a year at present but if we sign the young Marseille lad on a free as been quoted before, maybe Baines around too and starting to do coach badges etc is good idea?

So financial uncertainty due to covid then?

We have an obvious first choice right back. We have a back up with great pedigree and experience although ageing now.
We may be bringing in a central defender who may be able to cover that position if necessary and there are a couple of players who could fill in their at a push.

Why spend lots of money to fill a position where we are more than happy with our first choice ?

If only.
