"You've been in the house too long" they said. And, he naturally fled. Why in his life does he give valuable time to people he'd much rather kick in the eye?

The reason that people like Roy Keane and Graham souness are such good television critics is that they give an honest opinon and if that opinon goes against the norm or offends players of a very high standing(such as Gerrard or Rooney or Lampard) then so be it.
Most of the other pundits are not controversial, will blame the lesser known players and are afraid to criticise the icons.
In a word they are boring ...and their opinon counts for nothing.

Its like Bill Shankly if he were alive now and could see Liverpool Football Club.

He'd call them out on their antics and they'd of banned him from the training ground / club.
