Godfrey: I knew jackxxxx about Godfrey before he came on the radar, except when I played FM19 and he was picked up Burnley and went on to become England international (Don' judge me for FM
). So yea, I was intrigued to see him come in, and he has been excellent from my perspective.
Good: He is a bundle of energy and is always pushing upfield, downfield, widefield (I know, not a term). In all, whenever I see him in the lineup I am assured of one part of the backline being covered. I enjoy, really enjoy watching him play.
Bad: Possibly, needs a calmer, experienced head besides him in the back with him to guide him. While it's a joy to see him gallivanting beyond the half line, it also makes me fearful.
Keane: I generally like Keane as a CB, silently goes about his job. He has his cons, but his willingness to put body on line puts him at #2 on my list.
Good: Experienced head, calm. Efficient
Bad: We all expect him to be more than he is and I doubt if he can give anything more than he is right now (I could be wrong, but...). And the pace...
Mina: I was smiling the whole day when I heard we were bringing the Colombian to Goodison. I had just watched him trouble keepers at set pieces in the world cup. I might have given some middle-finger-salutes to some of my other-merseyside-club-fan friends
I visualized him to be Lescott+Jagielka all rolled into one. Well it definitely was a good dream.
Good: When he is on fire, he seems to belong to the best-of-the-world category. He still has a presence in the six-yard box at the other end. I saw (from the streams of course) at least 2-3 opposition players guarding him at corners and freekicks to box him in. He plays with joy of a child.
Bad: When is not on fire, he makes me wonder "why". He plays with joy of a child with even skillsets of a child at those times. He continues to frustrate even after so many years with us. Of course his injuries are also a concern as everybody has mentioned.
Holgate: I believe he came to us from Barnsley around the same time Stones was getting into first-team and I had hopes of him emulating his senior from Barnsley. Please correct me if I am remembering this differently. Wasn't he brought in to be an understudy of Coleman at RB? I seem to recall he was originally meant to be a RB, but got slotted into CB role when he excelled there, and maybe we thought we had found another Stones, who was also originally a RB(?).
I was excited to see him play in some of his early games. I don't know what has happened to him. He seems to have lost his way completely. Maybe, he is weighted down by expectations, I don't know. I am not looking forward to seeing Holgate into the starting line anymore.
Sitting 7500 Kms away I can't say I have seen Branthwaite (or any of the the u-23 players) play, so can't really say anything about him.
So in my honest opinion, If we visualize the backline as a unit, we may want to build the defensive unit with Godfrey as a main-stay, with Keane providing wise counsel, Mina for the entertainment and to be part of a back-3 if needed, but otherwise as a backup. Possibly move on Holgate if someone comes up with an offer. We need at least 2-3 options available as backup to make an assault on the top-4 next year.
