Let's discuss the center backs

Non of them seem to be leaders to me. Maybe Godfrey can become a leader, but Keane always looks startled, Mina is hot and cold and Holgate had a really disappointing season to me.

How is Mina error prone? Injury prone yes, and that is a massive negative, but he is by far our most composed and reliable defender when he plays. He’s the only one that senses danger and positions himself correctly too.
There is a lot of yo-yo ing on players on this site (obviously) but I don't really get it for Mina. He still makes the occasional error that makes you shake your head, but honestly he has done a great job cutting that out of his game. Think he's underrated due to the injuries at this point. We are a lot more reliable week to week with him in the lineup and the results speak for themselves this season.

I'm not saying he's a Funes Mori like, and I love watching Mina play, but I don't think anyone (himself included) has any idea what he's going to do with the ball. Maybe unpredictable is better than error prone, but you ideally want something like a synergy of thought and effort with your backline sometimes I wonder if you can get that with Mina.

He's the closest thing we have to a leader at the back. I think people confuse his gangly awkwardness with being poor. Keane, Holgate and Godfrey all look better beside him which says it all. Sadly he just can't put a decent run of games together.
I think Carlo will want to bring in his own defender, someone he considers captain material so one of Keane or Mina will go and I'd prefer it to be Keane but i think Mina is a more sellable asset and we have too many players we can't rely on due to recurring injuries.

More to what you said above (or maybe it was someone else), if he wasn't injured so much maybe we'd have the impression that he was rock solid at the back. It's very easy to conflate one the of unreliability for another. I love Yerry, just not certain he's part of the solution (he's no Gbmain, but still). I agree his leadership is valuable, but I don't see him as a club captain center back type, and that's what we need to add IMO (unless Godfrey is that type).

Ben is the only one worth keeping, but in reality we aren't going to punt the others and replace them over 1 summer, Sell Holgate and replace him, Sell Mina and replace him, that will do for sales this year.

i wouldn't be surprised if Carlo tries to bring in a former player whether that's some sort of part exchange with Napoli for Koulibaly or offering someone like Jerome Boateng or even Sergio Ramos (he's a free agent right?) a decent 1 year contract. I hope that's not the case but i do think he likes a bit of experience at the back.
I agree, he's not a captain, he's not that leader we need.

The only two we should consider selling are Mina and Holgate.

Holgate because he could fetch a decent fee and still in his mid-20s hasn't hit the required level yet and Mina because of his wages and contract situation - not any lack of ability. Keane is a good player and probably won't attract the kind of fee he's worth anyway.

I'd be tempted to keep the 4 of them and loan Branthwaite out again as we're not in Europe, but if we think we could attract a serious player and need to operate a one-in-one-out policy to raise the funds, we'll need to sell one.
