Liverpool-Ukrainian Eurovision, 2023

No I haven't. But success or failure will be determined where you're located. We're talking here about a thriving tourist city like Liverpool and so the city centre bars, restaurants and hotels servicing all kinds of traffic from the various conferences and events - which is who Im referring to - will be a different proposition to the food and hospitality sector elsewhere in the city. Yes, there'll be a shake out of some, but that'll just leave the market to bigger competitors.

As I said, I cant believe I'm having to defend the act of defending migrant workers and kids working in that sector. They really are the super-exploited of the UK economy. Anyone defending those who make cash off them are obscene or obtuse, or both.
None of this was your original point...at all.

Had no idea that YNWA was played at it, until now. Just as well I stopped watching after 30 minutes. I'd had enough of it at that point, and I say that as someone who has been a fan of Eurovision over the years.

You can see why they would play to the gallery like that, its so easy for them to do so, but at the same time, local sensitivities should have some bearing. We'd be called bitter for pointing that out, but as always with these things, if it doesn't matter to the majority, it doesn't matter to anyone.

I notice all the Eurrovision champions on here have made themselves scarce after that humilation we suffered as a club.

Apparently they were "so proud of my city, lad; couldn't be prouder, lad" up to that point...and then they vanished.

Fools rush in....I suppose.

I enjoyed the build up and the buzz around the city but the actual shows were boring as hell (as they usually are, but apparently worse than usual? ). I stopped watching and didn't hear that song from the musical Carousel either.

We are not a consideration anymore I suppose.

What irks me is there must have been 1000s of meetings and input from the EBU / BBC as to the content of the show, what is and is not appropriate to be included. The potential for a cultural faux pas at Eurovision is unlimited. For everything that gets the green light, there are multiples of this in terms of suggestions that are rejected out of hand. Local sensitivities should be considered to avoid the implication of bias. Surely that's from the Dummies Guide to Event Management? A student intern would know that.

Sporting heritage is a big deal and allegiances are an integral part of peoples identity, in a football mad city. I can believe it, but at the same time I can't.
They gave two fingers to 50% of their hosts. Anyone thinking of pointing that out in advance was either laughed off, or just decided there was no point in raising it an an issue.

It isn't relevant that we are a non-entity in footballing terms. It wouldn't have happened in Manchester, or Madrid, or Milan.

Dont rule out consultation with Merseyside bodies - including the council - on what was offered in the 'Liverpool song book'. They have that on their hands too.

In any case, wasn't this supposed to be Ukraine's chance to shine? Their show? Why weren't we given a Ukrainian songbook?

Still "der city looked great, lad...soooo proud of my city as a blue".

Where have that lot disasppeared to?

For what it's worth David - I wasn't arsed in the slightest that YNWA was played.

I admit that it was perhaps a tad tone deaf, but it did absolutely nothing to spoil what was otherwise a hugely successful event for the city.

It’s an interesting point on who actually makes money or benefits from these sorts of events. Does the council receive a big windfall? How does it benefit your average resident? I know city centre hotels and bars etc will have done well but will most of that money not leave the city anyways as they are generally part of chains?

I'm really pleased for our fantastic independent businesses which really thrived off of this. After Covid this could potentially be a great boost for them.

Comment below the line from the Guardian's report on Eurovision..View attachment 210823View attachment 210824

This is the tone of everything The Guardian and their sheep put out in relation to Everton and Liverpool.

The attempt at apology here is ridiculous.

The very point of the inclusion of YNWA is to enable the point scoring afterwards.

There is just no need for this guy to fall over himself in admitting it.

The council and the spiv economy bluffers in the tourist trade bodies always hype up 'the benefit to the local economy'.

In reality it's bar owners, restaturants and hotels that coin it in and everyone else pays their taxes to put the midden events on for their benefit.

Long story short: national and local government spending is always for the benefit of capital....whatever the size of the enterprise.
