Since it’s introduction I’ve said that VAR should have some form of coach’s challenge. Exactly like in the NFL.
Activating that challenge would force, at the very least, the on pitch Ref to go and look at the monitor.
One challenge per game and you lose it if you are wrong, keep it if the Ref changes his mind.

If the Ref yesterday had all the angles, it may well have been a yellow.

I see mike riley is meeting with the Dutch league to review their use of offside as they have a 10cm margin, which would be a positive introduction, a bit like cricket. But also like cricket, they should just have it where var can overrule the ref if its a clear and obvious error. I'm almost certain that's what it is now, but the var doesn't understand what clear and obvious means, in which case there's no hope.

Sky's ref watch shows just how full of it refs actually are.
" I fully accept he didn't mean to do it and he didn't mean to be malicious,"
So surely that rules out serious foul play/violent conduct?

Dermott Gallagher was talking absolute sh*te through the whole of that part of the show, nothing unusual there tbf.

I thought Steve Staunton's (and Sue Smith's) reaction to his ludicrous mitigation of the VAR official, Stuart 'fake goal' Attwell (Maguire headlock on Azpilicueta), summed up his lack of credibility perfectly.

Dermott tried to say that the VAR (a.k.a. Stuart Attwell) hadn't properly analysed the incident enough as the ball was still in play and the action ongoing. Staunton replied that he was absolutely astounded by such an explanation, it only took him one quick look to see it was a definite penalty, calling it the worst decision of the weekend by a country mile. Sue also said much the same that she was extremely surprised given how it was so obvious, even on first viewing.

I must admit his hypothesis of it not being studied properly (as it should have been because the ball didn't go out soon after), was so lacking in any credibility precisely because it took no time at all to adjudicate.

He's so reluctant to castigate his mates for even the most greviously poor mistakes that he ends up bending over backwards trying to seek any explanation, however far out and absolutely ridiculous that is.

The fact was Attwell couldn't have looked at it even for a few seconds despite it being put out that VAR had done so and then subsequently decided there was nothing worthy of a second look.

This all day long, although one challenge for the match isn't enough imho, 1 per half maybe.
Leave the decision with the ref as in nfl or mlb.
Unfortunately they just ignored all the other sports who have spent years perfecting their review system and came up with something utterly ridiculous and not fit for purpose.
I would also add that if you need lines to decide if a player is onside then advantage should go to the attacker and he is onside. Show the freeze frame to the ref and one look should be enough to say he's level and goal stands
But either way no ref would have changed their mind on digne

Sorry bad error, meant Stephen Warnock not Steve Staunton

I didn't see the game (fortunately), or the incident… Did it look like this?

The reds were pretty convinced this wasn't a card I recall.

Am I the only one that thinks the automatic 3 match ban is a bit extreme? I don't think every red card is the same. The league should look at case by case and decide what the appropriate punishment should be.

3.5 matches seems way too much for that foul in my opinion.
You’re not alone, but the FA and premier league are idiots when it comes to rules and refereeing in general so it won’t be changing.
