2021/22 Lucas Digne

Digne has been poor for at least a season and a half now. He's the kind of player like baines that you can excuse for being small and weak because of the excellent delivery they offer. But if they stop producing the goods they become a liability and that's whats happened here.

It's been too long a time that he hasn't performed for it to be considered poor form and he's just not the same player he was. He wasn't anywhere near baines level anyway even at his best.

I wouldn’t mind us selling him if this new kid turns out to be decent, as he’s at his peak price now and we need to sell to buy.

However, let’s not now make out as if he isn’t a very good footballer just cos it looks like he’s going, there was a period where he was excellent for us.
The thing is we don’t know how good the new kid is. It’s a big risk to sell Digne and rely on the new kid. Hopefully we don’t get rid of Digne until the summer

100% right. See you later Luca.

Digne’s predicament doesn’t have a thing to do with his performance, or lack of same. He had a huge spat with Benitez…see ya later Lucas.
I just want fair value when we sell him.

He’s obviously a good player, you only need to look at the international team he plays for and the teams he’s being linked with to see that. Wherever he goes it’ll be to a club higher up the league than us.

That said, manager’s fallen out with him so if the manager’s staying he needs to go. I’m unsure how this helps us from an FFP perspective and freeing up money for other signings though. No matter what you think of Digne as a player, surely there are other priority positions than left back?

How is selling Digne for £20 mil and signing the Ukrainian lad for £20 mil going to help us bring in players for other areas? I thought the idea was to raise money, I could understand if we had a cheap replacement for Digne and could then spend the remaining few on improving other areas of the squad. This is just swapping a left back for a left back.

We'll prob sell him for more than 20m and get the younger lad for abit under that. Added to that the younger lad will prob be on a lot less wages. I think it's wages that are causing our Premier League Sustainability issues mostly

If we sold Digne for even the same as we buy this chap for then were massively better off with FFP as Dignes book value is only £6-7mil.

Premier league only

2018/19 33starts (2sub)4 goals / 4 assists
2019/20 35starts 7 assists
2020/21 30starts 7 assists
2021/22 13starts 0 assists

Those assist numbers are quality until this season where he has clearly been asked to stay back.

If we had another Digne on the right instead of Coleman for the past 3 seasons then we'd be flying.

The "Digne has been poor for 18months / 2 years" comments are utter nonsense.

All the stats say otherwise...its only this season under Benitez.

For me, todays not about Digne.

Whether Digne decided he doesn’t want to play or not, we’re clearly moving on. I’m not against that, as I don’t think he’s performed well for a while and he’s actually at an age where we’ll get some resale value from him.

Badly need some youth in the side. So thanks for some good memories, and sad you didn’t push on as much as we’d liked.
I'm with some of this. Yes youth and yes digne hasnt performed well for a while. But I do think digne could flourish if we really are going to be a counter attacking side. I will be hoping this is an addition to the squad rather than a buy and sell.

I’m slightly concerned we are cashing in one someone who over the last few years has been one of our best players, and replacing him with a player with no major league experience.
I find it a bit concerning too, but keep reminding myself we have a squad of players on huge wages who simply aren’t doing it as a team, under several mangers including ‘superstar’ ones.
It seems counter intuitive to let better players go rather than add to them, but we can’t shift the dross which leaves us with only the talent to play with, talent that across the squad has consistently under performed as a team.
At this stage I’m simply not that bothered who we sell as I’m of the opinion that whoever comes in will be cheaper, and collectively we can’t do much worse than we have over the last 3-4 seasons.
We can’t have multiple players on £100k contracts and be so far from finishing top 6.
I’m no fan of Benitez but the club has looked like needing a clear out for a while now and he’s the only one been able exert enough influence (or interest) to do it. Just hope he’s right.
