2021/22 Lucas Digne

Was there a sell on in his purchase?
Edit - appears no sell on which is good, Sky Sports reported his fee as £18m rising to £20m so unless is tied into the add on ie if we sell him for a profit we have to fork out the extra £2m.

I dont grudge Digne getting out of here. Why play for a manager who doesn't want to support or work with you?
More importantly this is yet another example of our mixed failed strategies. Digne was the 'premium' option, but also needed coaching and strategy to work with (he's seen 2-3 formations and tactics of managers) and alongside we had the long-term DoF development approach of Nkonkou and Small, waiting to deputise for Digne but never getting the chance to do so. So once again, mixed strategies get compounded and our new LB will probably be here longer than the manager.

It amazes me people saying we should be keeping Digne and the Ukrainian should be an understudy.

It’s pretty obvious that won’t work, Digne and benetiz have fallen out. You cant have a player under minding the boss so he has to go. How hard is that to understand?

Selling Digne makes sense at his age and for 20m plus.

Digne is a good player but we simply can’t keep holding onto these players until they are 33, Seamus Coleman levels of turbo gash and of no value whatsoever. What we are doing with Digne should be our model from now on. Buy players young and relatively cheap, sell them at a profit when they reach a certain age, and buy the next one young and relatively cheap. Good bit of business from Everton this, and I hope this is how things continue going forward.

As much as I genuinely believe he's been crap since his wife gave birth to their first child about 2 years ago, it'll be a disgrace if we offload him, widely regarded amongst opposition fans as one of our very, very few top quality players, for anything less than a tidy profit on what we paid for him. Age-wise he's in the peak of his career and once he's gone, there is still no backup to our new signing. If he doesn't hit the ground running, or gets injured, then we could be looking at an even worse second half to the season, which would probably mean a tight relegation battle if we don't instantly improve our points per game ratio, which we are currently showing very little sign of doing.

I've never known another clubs fans like ours for turning on our own players. We really are a different breed.

Digne is one of the best left backs in the league. I'm pleased with our new signing but he should be as back up to Digne, not to replace him. Both our first XI and our squad will be weaker as a result.
On his day Digne is a great left back. However, for whatever reason, he is not going to get another game under this manager. Therefore selling him doesn’t weaken the squad.

In fact, if his sale enables us to get a RB as well, then you can argue we have improved.

Hate the way it’s been done (frozen out publicly); but the sale does make sense on so many levels.

He’s not a great athlete so needs someone in front of him who can help hold the ball and allow him to get forward, Bernard for example.

With Gray on the left wing, they’ve had basically no interplay between each other which I think isn’t just by design but also because Digne just isn’t fast enough.

No doubt he’ll look great in a champions league team, but I don’t think he’ll ever look that good for us in the current system.

What you do is....buy replacements/competition and ease them in/out. Nothing to do with keeping 33 year olds.

You don't sell you best players in there peak years and throw in a young replacement straight away...unless you're a selling club.

Reason why Coleman is still playing is that we've never attempted to replace him. By the sounds of it we're gonna buy some kick from the Scottish Sunday League. So still expect Coleman there for the time being

Everton cannot afford to pay 18M for a backup.

Our back-ups are normally free agents.

I think he’s great and sad to see him leave. However, out of the handful of players we have who have value, he’s probably the most dispensable given our current set up.

He’s fairly flawed defensively, particularly in stopping crosses, and he gets caught out of position quite a lot. That’s ok if you are one of the primary threats going forward but given how we are set up and a greater reliance on the winger as an attacking outlet, he does quite fit or work as well. The system seems to exacerbate his flaws and stifle his strengths.

It’s a shame but in the circumstances it’s probably one of the only things we can do. And it’s encouraging that the funds are being reinvested into younger players (and it’s looking like we’ll finally get a right back).
