We clear 17 mill after Amort for accounting purposes i.e. free cash in regard to FFP.

I dont agree, i think hes one of our most influential players, if people think he didn't perform last year i think its down to confirmation bias, hes had less of an impact this year - really because the manager put shackles on him and he rebelled against that and here we are.

Its this simple, we have gotten 5 points in the league since Oct out of 33. We're one of the worst teams in the league, we've just given away one of our highest quality players to a rival, for little or no benefit to us and replaced him with two non established players - who dont know will be up to contributing or improving us in any way, we did this at a higher cost to us - than doing absolutely nothing.

You can extol the philosophy of player trading all you like, it doesn't matter if you are selling quality players when your in relegation form, and your taking the risks in the market we are.

We are in a worse position - therefore bad deal.
Very true this.

If we had an extra six points on the board (safe but not challenging for Europe) it would have been sensible business.

We need some wins soon.

For all intents and purposes, Digne's wages were circa £120,000pw, which covers the wages of the new lads combined.

Really what's their weekly wages?

Digne amortisation was 1.2 mill a year.

The two new lads will be 6 mill a year.

We will take in 17 mill and committed over 35mill + in labilities.

Thats before we begin to think will these lads over the next 18 games prove better than either Digne or Coleman for that matter. I mean do you trust Evertons ability to recruit?

Im not seeing how this leaves us stronger.

So that's pretty much that then.

Don't blame him one bit for leaving, I just wish it was to a team from abroad. We all know he'll now thrive at Villa with far superior players around him.

As much as he's underwhelmed for the last season or two, this whole transfer just irks me (almost to the point in believing it seems deliberate) what with both Rafael and Gerrard benefitting the most out of this saga.

Its a very bad deal for these reasons.

Digne cost to us is:

Book Price: 7.2 mill
Amort: 1.2. mil
Wages: 6.2 mill

Annual cost: 7.4 mill

So we clear 17.8 million from the deal, and a cost of 7.4 mill from the accounts (however we have taken on the cost of the two new full backs)

The question is the squad stronger or weaker with Digne in it - to my mind stronger in it.

Secondly where are you going to find a better quality player then him for 17.8 mill transfer fee at an annual cost of 7.4 million - your not. Thats what people mean by the deal has to improve the squad/club - this doesn't do it.

Therefore a poor deal.

As for age 30 year old Chris Wood, is signing for Newcastle for the same fee - Digne is an infinitely more high quality player than Wood, pound for pound regardless of positions.

Bad deal and we are weaker for it.
You can't compare the Wood and Digne deals. Wood is a player that Burnley absolutely don't want to lose, he has a release clause that has been triggered by a club who have more money than God and are happy to pay well above the market value for a player with a primary intention of kneecapping their closest rivals in the Premier League survival stakes. Newcastle also have no problems with P&S so this deal does not impact them even slightly in the short to medium term.

Digne is a player we are happy to sell, perhaps even have to sell, and have already replaced with a player far younger reportedly on less than half of Digne's salary. Whether we will be weaker for it, time will obviously tell. We may well be worse off in the left back spot but we have also signed a right back and who can't possibly be worse than the ones we already have, so we may well find out that the impact on the squad is minimal or possibly even positive.

£25m is a fair market price for a 28 year old left back. Perhaps we could have got £30m if there was no alleged fall out, perhaps not. What we have managed to get isn't a bad price though.

I’m sad that he’s gone, but who are we to argue with the mighty Ralf Beneathus.

But each day, we move slowly towards the day when we’ll possibly have a forward thinking coach who won’t let his ego get in the way of the team.

The transfer is deliberate...well spotted!

do we want another situation like coleman where the fans turn on the player because we can’t replace him and he isn’t good enough anymore
There was zero chance of a situation like this.

Lets not rewrite someone's ability or contribution to the club because a manager with previous for the exact same thing spat the dummy out when a player rightly challenged him on tactics which have seen us drop like a stone in the league. The presser was such a cringeworthy performance I was left wondering why it wasn't headlined as a Bill Kenwright Production.

He was one of the first names on the teamsheet for almost everyone.
